Experience nature: Open day in the forest kindergarten in Passau!
On June 1, 2025, the Caritas forest kindergarten at the University of Passau will open its doors to interested families. An open day will take place from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., focusing on the kindergarten car in the parking lot in Ingling and the surrounding area of the Neuburg Forest. The director, Karin Eibl, will be on site to answer questions and offer insights into the concept of the forest kindergarten, which is designed for children from three years of age up to school entry age. The kindergarten will start in September 2025 with a total of 20 childcare places. All places are also open to children from the city and district of Passau who are not members of the university. Registration is available on site and there will be a variety of crafts and play stations, including a teepee.
Forest kindergarten is an innovative response to the growing need to give children experiences in nature. This concept not only offers places for children of university members, but also for external children who are interested in a natural pedagogical approach. It was recently announced that additional places are available at short notice and the operators are inviting all interested parents to apply for a childcare place.
Learning close to nature
The special focus of a forest kindergarten distinguishes it from conventional facilities. Instead of indoors, children spend most of their time outdoors, learning about the seasons and playing with natural materials instead of manufactured toys. This concept has been established in Germany since the late 1970s, inspired by Scandinavian models. Since then, the number of forest kindergartens has continued to rise, and many families value the connection to nature that such facilities provide.
The basic idea of a forest kindergarten aims to compensate for the lack of nature experiences and exercise opportunities in today's urban environment. An environmental educational approach is pursued that promotes the holistic development of children and strengthens their awareness of nature. By independently exploring and playing outdoors, children can develop their imagination and creativity and benefit from experiences in nature.
