Large symposium on Bamberg Cathedral: A look into the history of cathedrals!

Today, April 2, 2025, the University of Bamberg announces an important symposium on medieval and modern archeology. The event will take place on April 11, 2025 at 10 a.m. and on April 12, 2025 at 9:30 a.m. in the wedding house, Am Kranen 12 (room KR12/02.01), in Bamberg. Under the topic “Bamberg Cathedral, Eichstätter Cathedral and Walter Sage”, experts will discuss the challenges and news in the area of pre-Romanesque to high medieval cathedral construction in Central Europe. This symposium is particularly important because it focuses on the architectural innovations preserved in archaeological monuments and addresses the difficult reconstruction of the architectural design of older churches up to the year 1000.

Prof. Dr. Walter Sage, the first holder of the Chair of Medieval and Modern Archeology (AMANZ) at the University of Bamberg, plays a central role in this event. From 1969 to 1972, Sage carried out extensive excavations in Bamberg Cathedral, during which almost the entire main nave and large parts of the side aisles were uncovered. This work revealed the foundations of all construction phases and enabled the discovery of numerous burials as well as a large number of small finds, including elements of the interior of the first cathedral, which are important for the reconstruction.

Symposium details and participants

All interested parties are cordially invited to take part in this symposium. The participation fee is 5 euros per day. An exclusive excursion to the crypts of Bamberg Cathedral is offered for speakers to experience the archaeological finds directly on site. Overall, a large number of specialists and experts are expected, including archaeologists, building researchers and art historians. A list of invited speakers includes:

  • Prof. Dr. Rainer Schreg (Lehrstuhl AMaNz)
  • Dr. Birgit Kastner (Erzbistum Bamberg)
  • Prof. Dr. Matthias Untermann (Heidelberg)
  • Prof. Dr. Carola Jäggi (Zürich)
  • Dr. Lena Schulten/Dr. Sandra Krizst (Magdeburg)
  • Marlene Kleiner M.A. (Reichenau)
  • Dr. Guido Faccani (Mainz)
  • Dr. Hildegard Sahler (Augsburg)
  • PD Dr. Donat Wehner (Quedlinburg, St. Servatii)
  • Dr. Nelly Wintergerst (Niedermünster Regensburg)
  • Dr. Sveva Gai (Paderborn)

On Friday Dr. Nelo Lohwasser will present excavation documentation on Bamberg Cathedral as part of his DFG project, while on Saturday Andrea Bischof M.A. will present their evaluations of the Eichstätter Cathedral. Both speakers hope to receive additional information from the participants.

Scientific processing and exhibition

The importance of the symposium is further underlined by the scientific processing of the finds from Bamberg Cathedral, which took place 50 years after they were recovered. This review was the trigger for a special exhibition in the Bamberg Historical Museum, which was organized in collaboration with the Historical Association and the Historical Museum. The owners of the finds are the Historical Museum and the Archdiocese of Bamberg, which work closely with the University of Bamberg to preserve and present the city's historical heritage.
