Medieval Studies and AI: Exciting events at the University of Bamberg!
The universities in Bamberg and Heidelberg are offering a variety of events in October 2025 that deal with various aspects of medieval studies and artificial intelligence. These events are intended to attract experts, students and interested parties and offer an exciting platform for interdisciplinary exchange.
One of the central events is the **Medieval Studies**, which begins on October 20, 2025 at 6:15 p.m. at the University of Bamberg in room U5/02.22. This weekly event series is aimed at those interested in medievalism and offers lectures on various topics. The first lecture will be given by Annina Freitag from the University of Bern and is entitled: “Basel-Petersberg: Ceramic research and its results on everyday life and economic history”.
Diverse lecture offerings
The **inaugural lecture by Prof. Dr. will take place on October 21, 2025 at 6:00 p.m. Norbert Kössinger**, which will also be held at the University of Bamberg in the lecture hall U7/01.05. Its topic is: “‘On copying German books’. Philology of the Middle Ages between better and worse.” The event is free of charge and is aimed at anyone interested.
The **lecture series: Comparing Cultures – Cultures of Comparing** also starts on this day. This interdisciplinary introduction to cultural comparison takes place in room U2/01.33 at the University of Bamberg and includes a lecture by Prof. Dr. Christoph Herzog opens. Its topic is "What is 'Turkish Culture'? Presuppositions, Aporia and Consequences" and the lectures will all be in English.
Another highlight is the **Reading and conversation with Daniela Seel**, which will take place on October 22, 2025 at 6:00 p.m. in the U2, lecture hall U2/00.25. Seel presents her volume of poetry “After Eden” and at the same time brings her experience as a publisher of the independent publisher kookbooks. This event is also free and open to everyone.
Artificial intelligence in focus
The University of Bamberg is paying particular attention to the **KI Herbst Uni 2025**, which will take place from November 5th to 7th, 2025 from 9:00 a.m. in Erba, An der Weberei 5. This workshop on artificial intelligence is specially designed for students from the 10th grade and young women aged 17 and over. No prior knowledge of computer science is required and the registration deadline is October 27, 2025. The initiative is funded by the BMFTR.
The topic of artificial intelligence is also being intensively discussed. AI is considered a dimension of the digital transformation of society. In this context, the challenges for media education are particularly discussed. It is becoming clear that algorithmic decision-making systems can have both individual and social impacts, including risks of discrimination. The discussion makes it clear that it is becoming increasingly important to understand and critically reflect on how AI works.
These events offer a valuable opportunity to both deepen knowledge of medieval studies and to deal with the implications of artificial intelligence in today's society. Media education is considered necessary in order to be able to realistically assess the influence of AI on education and society.
The University of Bamberg offers an overview of the events, making these programs accessible not only to experts but also to the broader public. Those interested can find out more and register with the respective contact persons.
