TUM shines in the world university ranking: top positions in technology and research!
The Technical University of Munich (TUM) has once again positioned itself as the best university in the European Union TUM reported. With a consistent place in the top 30 in the British magazine's renowned "World University Ranking", TUM is one of the leading educational institutions worldwide. The university also shows strength in the unique rankings for departments, reaching 14th place in computer science and 19th place in natural sciences.
The “World University Ranking” is based on various factors, including a survey of scientists about the reputation of universities in research and teaching. Further evaluation criteria include the number of publications per researcher, citations per publication, the supervision ratio of teachers and students as well as the amount of third-party funding acquired from industry. The degree of internationalization and the number of patents are also taken into account in the evaluation, which underlines the comprehensive nature of this ranking.
Excellent placements in other rankings
In addition to these impressive rankings, TUM presents outstanding results in other important rankings. It ranks 22nd worldwide in the “QS World University Ranking”, according to QS and reached 13th place in the “Global Employability Ranking”. In addition, TUM shows its innovative strength and future orientation in the training of “Digital Leaders in Higher Education” with 7th place. In the “Interdisciplinary Science Ranking” the university is placed 12th and in the “University Impact Ranking” it leads in the Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure category.
The QS World University Ranking 2025 not only assesses academic reputation and the quality of teaching, but also incorporates factors such as employability and sustainability. A total of 1,500 universities from 106 countries are ranked, with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) taking first place for the thirteenth year in a row. Places two to ten are occupied by Imperial College London, the University of Oxford and Harvard University, among others.
The importance of university rankings
It is worth mentioning that university rankings such as those of the QS or those of the Times Higher Education (THE) often make international comparisons and use various indicators to assess quality. The rankings can provide important information to potential students, universities and political decision-makers. Nevertheless, they are controversial because methodological concerns are raised about their significance. Critics argue that the actual quality of teaching often cannot be accurately reflected, while supporters point to the promotion of competition and the possibility of improving quality.
In the European higher education landscape, the diversity of the institutes must also be taken into account. With its individually weighted indicators, the U-Multirank offers a multidimensional view of universities and thus contributes to transparency in the education market.
Overall, TUM not only promotes its own reputation through its impressive rankings, but also contributes to strengthening German and European higher education. These achievements reflect a strong commitment to research and teaching as well as innovative approaches to training the next generation of leaders.
