Berlin university teams are setting new standards with innovative ideas!
On July 8, 2025, the organizers of the Funpreneur competition at the Free University of Berlin the most innovative business ideas from the student community. The event attracted bachelor students from all Berlin universities who developed impressive projects with just five euros in start-up capital.
The first three places went to the teams CUPGUARD, DryFoot and TrotToGo. The winning team CUPGUARD was awarded prize money of 1,200 euros. DryFoot and TrotToGo received 800 euros and 400 euros, respectively. Berliner Sparkasse supported these cash prizes, which emphasized creative solutions. DryFoot also won the audience award and a special award from Science & Startups, which included access to office workspaces as well as mentoring and workshops.
The winning ideas in detail
The award-winning ideas illustrate the diversity and creativity of the participants:
- CUPGUARD (1. Platz): Ein wiederverwendbarer, lebensmittelechter Silikonüberzug für auslaufsichere Trinkflaschen, der spülmaschinenfest ist.
- DryFoot (2. Platz): Ein ultraleichter, sockenförmiger Schuhtrockner für nasse Schuhe, der ohne Strom funktioniert.
- TrotToGo (3. Platz): Eine digitale Plattform, die Reitschulen mit Reitinteressierten verbindet und Buchungen sowie Kommunikation digitalisiert.
The competition is led by Prof. Dr. Janina Sundermeier and Natalie Mahlert lead and follow the motto: “Have fun, be creative, think entrepreneurially”. Participants were also supported by a network of supporters, including the IHK Berlin, the Wirtschaftsjunioren Berlin e.V. and the Härting law firm.
A look at the past of the competition
Last year, on July 2, 2024, the LehrCraft team took first place in the Funpreneur competition win. LehrCraft is a platform that aims to connect primary schools and students in order to reduce class cancellations. They also received prize money of 1,200 euros and a coaching voucher for their innovative idea.
The basic structure and idea of the competition remains constant: students develop a comprehensive concept from a simple business idea in a short time, supported by local business representatives and partners. This creates a dynamic environment in which entrepreneurial thinking is encouraged.
Startups and the Berlin innovation landscape
Berlin remains a central location for startups in Germany, with a variety of innovative companies regularly emerging from competitions like this one. To date, the capital represents 19.1% of all startups in Germany. The information and communications technology, medicine, nutrition and consumer goods sectors are particularly well represented.
The best-known startups in Berlin include Zalando, N26 and Tier Mobility. These companies show how promising the startup culture is in the region and form the backbone of a dynamic economic landscape that rewards creative thinking and entrepreneurial courage.
Overall, the Funpreneur competition not only highlights the innovative power of young talent, but also the strong support network that has been created in Berlin on scales to successfully promote entrepreneurial initiatives.
