Berlin CITY CYCLING: Together for a sustainable cycling adventure!

In the spirit of sustainability and the promotion of bicycle mobility, CITY CYCLING is taking place again in Berlin. This year, the Technical University of Berlin (TU Berlin) will take part in the campaign with its own team, which runs from May 16 to June 5, 2025. The aim of the TU is to send a strong signal for bicycle-friendly and sustainable mobility in the capital. The competition covers all kilometers that the participants cover by bike during the campaign period, be it on the way to university, while shopping or in their free time. Registration for participation takes place via the CITY CYCLING website, and it is also possible to take part with a handbike or wheelchair. Last year was extremely successful for the TU Berlin: over 106,000 kilometers were cycled, which earned sixth place out of around 1,800 Berlin teams. This year, the TU has set itself the ambitious goal of being among the top five teams.

Registration for this year's campaign is now possible on the CITY CYCLING website. The website also offers promotional materials and helpful tips for cycling tours. If you want, you can create your own team or join an open team. Participation is open to everyone who lives, works, belongs to a club or attends a (university) school in Berlin. The teams can consist of different groups such as companies, clubs, administrations, educational institutions, circles of friends and neighborhoods. The aim is to collect as many bike rides as possible during the campaign period.

Cycling and environmental awareness

CITY CYCLING is not just a sporting challenge; it also contributes significantly to promoting environmentally friendly mobility. Experts estimate that up to 30% of car journeys in metropolitan areas could be shifted to cycling. The Federal Environment Agency emphasizes the potential for improvement in the bicycle infrastructure in order to relieve both the environment and the quality of life of city residents. Cities like Copenhagen, Amsterdam and Münster show how high levels of cycling use can revitalize cities, with Münster, for example, already having a cycling share of 39%.

The health-promoting aspects of cycling should not be underestimated. Regular cycling can increase life expectancy by up to 14 months. In addition, Germany aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 65% by 2030, with transport causing over 22% of these emissions. In addition to the obvious environmental benefits, cycling also offers economic benefits: cyclists in the Netherlands miss an average of one less day of work per year than non-cyclists. With great potential to improve air quality, the call for cycling is louder than ever.

Cycling is not only a cost-effective form of mobility, but also a lifestyle trend that is promoted by positive cycling infrastructure and a corresponding image. The focus is on campaigns to promote cycling and the creation of continuous cycle networks in order to further increase the proportion of cycling. The integration of public bicycle rental systems and car sharing offers also supplements the city's mobility and reduces the need to use cars.
