Art in Dialogue: UdK Berlin celebrates 50 years of creative diversity!

The Berlin University of the Arts (UdK Berlin) officially starts its anniversary year on February 8, 2025. The occasion is the 50th anniversary of the institution, which emerged in 1975 from the merger of the University of Fine Arts and the University of Music and Performing Arts. The event entitled "An Experimental Ecology. Art practice in the dialogue of disciplines at the UdK Berlin" offers an extensive program with 17 artistic contributions, including dance, theater, music, installations, video works and performances.

The creative works are the result of an open call that was organized specifically for students at the UdK Berlin. They reflect both the institute's identity and important social and ecological issues. The performance “Hypercapnia” addresses climatic tipping points, while the video installation “More than human perspectives” deals with resilience strategies of plants, animals and people. Furthermore, an interactive “circular factory” will be presented that tests alternative economic and resource use.

Event details

The festive event will take place on February 8, 2025 from 4 p.m. in the UNI.T - Theater of the Berlin University of the Arts, Fasanenstraße 1 B, 10623 Berlin. The anniversary is not only a look back at the history of the UdK, but also a platform for reflection on the future of art and its role in society.

The UdK is considered one of the most important art universities in Germany. Over 70 degree programs are offered at the faculties of fine arts, design, music and performing arts. Around 4,000 students, a third of whom have an international background, shape the atmosphere of the university. The UdK also contributes to Berlin's cultural life with more than 700 events every year.

Architecture and monument protection

The main building of the university, which was built in 1902, is a listed building and is located on Hardenbergstrasse, near the Zoological Garden in Berlin. The building is currently being extensively renovated. The aim of the measures is to restructure the fire protection and renovate the historic roofs. This work is carried out under strict monument preservation requirements, which include both the renewal of the construction period and the renovation of the Rabitz vaults underneath.

The structural measures are already being implemented and are expected to be completed by 2023. The careful planning for the project takes into account both the historical aspects of the building and the need for modern safety standards. With an area of 28,943 m², the building is a central element of the UdK and a symbol of its long tradition, which dates back to the founding of the Academy of Arts in 1696.

Prof. Dr. Norbert Palz has been president of the university since April 1, 2020 and is leading the institution into a time of change in which artistic disciplines and scientific considerations should be closely linked.

In a broad cultural context, the UdK positions itself not only as a training center, but also as an active contributor to the contemporary art scene in Germany. She is herself of deutschland.de mentioned as one of the best art colleges in the country.
