Focus on digital transformation in the judiciary
The use of artificial intelligence (AI) is increasing in the German judiciary. Since 2019, the SMART/IMJ project in Bavaria and Rhineland-Palatinate has been testing how machine learning can be used to automatically categorize documents in civil proceedings and extract metadata. This is just one of several projects to relieve the burden on service units in courts. Further projects aim to identify content relevant to criminal law and to support the judiciary in commercial and registry law through digital assistants.
The Bavarian judiciary has also made data from its registry courts available to promote the development of efficient AI solutions. From improving speech recognition to chatbots for legal applications, the aim is to achieve a high level of efficiency through innovative technologies. Scientific support and evaluations are obviously necessary in order to better understand the progress of the various developments.
The legal tech market is changing
The legal tech market in Germany is dynamic and currently includes around 300 active companies and up to 10,000 employees. With an estimated balance sheet total of 800 million euros, the market is largely characterized by technological innovations. Over 80% of providers integrate artificial intelligence into their services, especially in the areas of document analysis and generation. However, these providers face several challenges, including long sales cycles and regulatory hurdles that are often perceived as inhibiting innovation.
In the next twelve months, a third of legal tech providers expect to need more than €500,000 in external capital, particularly for AI investments. This lack of financial resources particularly affects younger companies, which often rely on bootstrapping. Successful companies such as rightmart or Bryter, on the other hand, have already completed significant rounds of financing. The interdisciplinary training of specialists is crucial in order to meet the increasing demands of digitalization in the legal market.
The “Legal Disruption Conference 2025” promises to shed light on the current trends and challenges in the legal tech sector and take a look at the future development of the industry.
