Revolution in payment transactions: The digital euro is taking shape!

On May 5, 2025, the European Central Bank (ECB) launched its innovation platform for the digital euro project. This initiative aims to comprehensively explore the potential of the digital euro for companies in various industries and commercial sectors. After a call for interest in October 2024, which received over 100 applications, around 70 market players are now taking part in the platform. These include merchants, fintech companies, start-ups, banks and payment service providers who work in two work streams: the “pioneers” and the “visionaries”.

The innovation platform, on which ESMT Berlin also acts as a partner, offers a new opportunity for companies to test their ideas. The newly created Digital Euro Hub will be used as a platform for simulating programmed payments with the digital euro and testing smart contracts. Companies interested in becoming part of this project are invited to actively participate.

Goals of the innovation platform

The ECB is pursuing several main goals: the technical implementation of digital euro payments is to be demonstrated and a platform is being created on which participants can interact with simulated digital euro interfaces. In addition, further use cases, ideas and visions for the further development of the digital euro are being explored. In particular, the work stream of the “pioneers” will be used to shed light on the technical implementation of conditional payments in the digital euro.

In contrast, the “Visionaries” workstream explores new use cases of the digital euro to address societal challenges. As an example, the possibility of opening digital euro wallets in post offices is discussed here in order to ensure access to digital euro services for everyone.

Technological approaches and data protection

The ECB is evaluating various technological approaches, including blockchain technology and other distributed ledger technologies (DLT) for smart contracts. Care is also taken to ensure that data protection mechanisms are developed to maintain a balance between anonymity and security, which must be in line with legal requirements. Joachim Wuermeling, Executive in Residence at ESMT Berlin, highlights that the digital euro can create economic value.

The ECB plans to summarize the results of the two streams of work in a report to be published later in the year. It is an important step in the development and integration of digital currencies into existing payment systems to make the digitization of invoice and payment processes more efficient and secure.

In summary, the digital euro is designed as an inclusive means of payment to complement cash and establish itself as a safe, stable means of payment in an increasingly digital world. ESMT Berlin plays an important role as an innovation partner, together with a large number of selected partners from the financial and technology sectors. The progress in these initiatives is a clear indicator of the future development in the field of digital currencies.
