Future Campus: Focus on young teachers for Berlin!

The information day “Future Campus for New Teachers for Berlin” will take place on February 28, 2025 at the Free University of Berlin in Dahlem. This event, which is organized by the four Berlin universities that train teachers - the Free University, the Humboldt University, the Technical University of Berlin and the University of the Arts - together with the Senate Department for Education, Youth and Family and the Berlin Network for Teachers with a Migrant Background, is aimed at young people from the tenth grade onwards.

From 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., participants will receive valuable insights into teacher training courses in Berlin. You can take part in workshops on various subjects and talk to experienced teachers and teacher training students. The event also offers a platform to present possible subject combinations and gives an impression of everyday university life.

Social responsibility and intercultural diversity

Prof. Dr. emphasizes the social responsibility of the university in teacher training. Sven Chojnacki, Vice President for Studies and Teaching at the Free University. This responsibility becomes particularly clear when you look at the demographic developments in Berlin. According to an OECD study, almost 12% of students at general education schools in the 2020/2021 school year did not have German citizenship. Over 33% of primary school students had a family history of migration in 2020.

The Berlin network, which was founded in 2010, aims to support students with a migration background who are interested in the teaching profession. It promotes intercultural diversity in the educational landscape by offering advice when choosing a course of study, during your studies and during your preparatory service.

International orientation of teacher training

Given the needs of an increasingly globalized labor market, the international orientation of teacher training is essential. Teachers must be able to convey global developments and their effects authentically. A survey as part of the OECD teaching study TALIS 2018 shows that only 32% of international teachers said that multicultural teaching was part of their training. This represents a significant need for action to better prepare prospective teachers for the challenges of an intercultural school reality.

With programs such as the BMBF-financed DAAD program “Lehramt.International”, teacher training is expanded to include intercultural and international aspects. The measures include full scholarships for school internships abroad as well as offers for the structural internationalization of teacher training courses. These initiatives are crucial in order to provide future teachers with not only the technical but also the interpersonal skills that are necessary for the teaching profession.

The commitment to intercultural education is also reflected in initiatives that aim to enrich non-mobile teacher training students with international experiences through guest lectures and digital projects. This comprehensive approach is intended to ensure that the next generation of teachers is prepared for both the diverse requirements of the international labor market and the challenges of a diverse student population.

Overall, it can be said that events such as the “Future Campus” and efforts to increase interculturality in the education system pave the way for future-oriented teacher training that meets the requirements of a modern, globalized society.
