Innovation boost for higher education: EMEX project takes off!

The Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF Film University has launched the “Emerging Media Exploration” (EMEX) project to research innovative media narrative technologies together with a European consortium. The film university reports that the project will run for three years and includes partners from Finland and the UK. These include the University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Tampere and the Lincoln School of Film & Media at the University of Lincoln.

EMEX takes a collaborative approach to analyzing the impact of new media technologies on storytelling. Led by Professor Björn Stockleben, the project focuses on three central themes of the digital economy: creating showcases for technological innovations, merging design and technology, and bringing together smaller European universities to provide high-quality courses.

Funding through Erasmus+

The EMEX project is funded by the Erasmus + Strategic Partnerships, which aim to support transnational projects. Erasmusly describes the objective of developing innovative processes and strengthening exchange between universities. EMEX is an example of promoting peer learning in higher education.

Students are trained in modern media techniques in interactive online courses, which enable them to first develop virtual concepts and then take part in international workshops. The activities include cooperation with around 160 students and 23 teachers as well as the design of five transnational courses on topics such as the future of television and virtual production. In this context, the project also represents a contribution to the development of a minor curriculum on emerging media.

Long-term perspectives

In the long term, EMEX wants to strengthen international cooperation between universities and industry. The aim is to develop a European dimension in the higher education sector. The EU As part of its higher education strategy, plans to offer 45% of 25 to 34 year olds a university degree by 2030. In addition, up to 60 universities are to be integrated into the “European Universities” initiative by mid-2024.

The interactions between educational institutions and industry are crucial for the development of innovative curricula. EMEX also offers a platform for the development of new educational approaches and the promotion of transnational study programs. Part of the EMEX curriculum is already offered as a 30 ECTS minor for Erasmus students.

Overall, the EMEX project shows an interesting example of the link between higher education, innovation and international exchange in the increasingly digitalized media world.
