New voice for young cardiologists: Dr. Tennigkeit leads Young DGK
On June 24, 2025, Dr. Johanna Tennigkeit has been appointed as the new deputy spokesperson for the Young DGK, the junior section of the German Society for Cardiology (DGK). Dr. Tennigkeit works at the Clinic for Cardiology, Nephrology and Pneumology at the MHB University Hospital in Brandenburg an der Havel. Its goal is to sustainably strengthen the promotion of young talent in the field of cardiology. MHB Fontane reports that the focus of the Young DGK is on regional visibility, participation and innovative formats to inspire young doctors for cardiology.
The planned measures include holding more events, targeted networking of members and the creation of low-threshold participation opportunities.
Goals and challenges of the Young DGK
The Young DGK has set itself the task of bringing the voice of young cardiologists into health policy discussions. This is done through regular communication with the DGK board. A central concern is the promotion of further training, science and research for young cardiologists. There are also plans to expand the Basic Science area to specifically support young scientists.
Dr. Tennigkeit emphasizes the importance of innovative formats that connect clinical practice and research. Existing programs such as the Congress Rookies program are being further developed. The Young DGK would like to use new formats to show orientation and concrete career paths.
Another focus is on expanding scholarship programs to support scientific projects and conference visits. But with these advances there are also challenges. In particular, the planning and compatibility of further training is a major concern for many young cardiologists. The Young DGK therefore advocates realistic case numbers, transparent rotations and greater flexibility in further training.
Regional initiatives and commitment
Strong local commitment is considered the key to promoting young cardiologists. Brandenburg was named the official Young DGK Ambassador location in 2024. Planned local campaigns in collaboration with communities such as Bernau and Neuruppin are intended to raise awareness about cardiology and arouse students' interest in taking part in these activities.
The Young DGK offers a platform for scientifically active doctors under the age of 40, assistants and nursing staff in cardiology as well as students who want to pursue a career in this field. Since its founding in 2011, the Young DGK has continuously developed and offers numerous activities such as its own sessions as part of the DGK conferences, regular meetings of section members and cooperation with European neighbors via the European Society of Cardiology (ESC).

With the realignment under the leadership of Dr. The Young DGK will be strengthened and can contribute even more effectively to the promotion of young cardiologists, which is of immense importance both for the future of cardiology and for patient care.
