Startups in focus: Success strategies for the future of energy research!

The hoped-for kick-off of the EIZ Spark Academy took place on March 8, 2025 with the start of the program of a new initiative aimed at talented researchers in the field of energy research. Under the leadership of Nina Defounga, CEO of TOM SPIKE, eight participants from different EIZ energy research laboratories came together to go through the first modules. Special topics at the opening event included the challenges and opportunities of entrepreneurship as well as the application of lean startup principles in practice.

A central aspect of the session was the discussion of problem formulation in a business context. Decision-making processes that help entrepreneurs develop viable business ideas were examined. The focus was on learning through play, with the Ball Point Game opening up new perspectives on entrepreneurial challenges for the participants.

Lean startup approaches in focus

The Lean Startup methods, as originally presented by Eric Ries, played a central role in the discussions. The iterative learning approach, which promotes critical thinking and efficient use of resources, is also of great importance in the context of this academy. Participants learned concepts such as the Build-Measure-Learn Loop, which allows ideas to be quickly tested and adapted, as well as the Minimum Viable Product (MVP), a low-threshold product that provides maximum insights into customer needs.

Eric Ries, whose book “The Lean Startup” provides practical methods for founding startups, offers a valuable basis with his concept. The idea of ​​validated learning emphasizes learning through customer feedback and differs from the traditional focus on success metrics. One of the key considerations in today's session was also how to make the decision whether to stick with current business knowledge or make deep changes.

The participation of the researchers was particularly highlighted: Akilan Mathiazhagan, Gökçen Devlet Sen, Markus Strehlau, Mirko Nikodinoski, Nina Defounga, Paul Hamelbeck, Rufat Asgarzade, Sai Ravi Gupta Polasanapalli and Wasif Haider Syed. Their dedicated participation demonstrated the entrepreneurial spirit that the EIZ Spark Academy wants to pass on to the next generation of scientists.

Developing a dynamic startup ecosystem that promotes, among other things, access to capital, talent and appropriate networks is crucial to the success of such initiatives. Collaborations between governments, universities and companies are necessary to create optimal conditions for innovation and entrepreneurship. At this point, incubators and accelerators, which provide young entrepreneurs with crucial resources, are of great importance.

In summary, the EIZ Spark Academy, with its innovative approach and focus on lean startup methods, opens up promising perspectives for participants and the further development of the startup ecosystem in energy research. This exchange of knowledge and experiences could be an important part of the creation of future technologies.
