Tanya Raab: Insights into a diverse Jewish life on the Viadrina!
On Thursday, May 8, at 6 p.m., Tanya Raab will present her book “Shalom Together!” at the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder). The reading will take place in the Senate Hall of the Viadrina, Große Scharrnstrasse 59, Room 109. The event is organized by the Viadrina Equal Opportunities Department, the university pastoral care and the Ecumenical European Center Frankfurt (Oder) e. V. organized. Admission to the reading is free.
In her book, published in March, Raab addresses misconceptions about Jewish life and provides insights into her own experiences. She wants to show how such stereotypes can be changed together. Tanya Raab talks about the diversity of Jewish life, religious festivals, personal dating experiences and the omnipresent anti-Semitism. In addition, the German culture of remembrance and the question of whether women can wear a kippah are examined.
A life marked by diversity
24-year-old Raab was born in Ukraine and came to Frankfurt (Oder) at the age of three, where she lives today. Not only is she Jewish, but she is also a queer and feminist activist. Your identity is complex; Faith is a central part, but not the only facet. Raab describes himself as “not a black and white picture” and represents the colorful diversity of Jewish identity.
She is active on her social media channels, especially Instagram, and discusses topics such as anti-Semitism, strength training and personal empowerment. Her posts often feature bold colors like bright red or yellow, reflecting her vibrant personality. This presence has brought her both support and hostility, especially since October 7, 2023, when social tensions surrounding anti-Semitism intensified.
Activism and art
Raab is not only a voice against hate, but also uses creative forms of expression such as poetry slam to convey her messages. She regularly appears on stages and shares her thoughts and feelings in her lyrics. Despite the challenges she faces as a young Jewish woman, she has a strong need for security for herself and her family.
Her life is characterized by courage, anger, fear and empowerment. A film about her, produced by Margarethe Neubauer, was broadcast on rbb on October 8, 2024 and highlights her path and her struggles. Raab's work not only represents her personal view of Jewish life, but also calls for greater engagement with anti-Semitism.
With her reading at the European University Viadrina on May 8, Tanya Raab is determined to change public perception about Jewish life and promote dialogue. “Shalom everyone!” Not only will a book be presented, but space will also be created for important discussions.
