Science in focus: Lausitz is investing over 10 billion euros!
When it comes to structural development in Lusatia, Brandenburg places a clear focus on promoting science and research. This was highlighted today, April 30, 2025, by Minister Kathrin Schneider as part of the presentation of the fourth report of the accompanying research on Lusatian structural development in Cottbus. She emphasized the essential role of science for the economic development of the region.
The report addresses the connection between scientific excellence and economic benefit. BTU President Prof. Gesine Grande emphasized the function of the Brandenburg Technical University Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU) as a network node within the Lausitz scientific landscape. Scientists, including Prof. Stefan Zundel from the BTU, emphasize that investments in scientific initiatives also benefit economic development.
Investments in research and development
Around six billion euros, more than half of the structural strengthening funds, flow into science and research. This includes the development of the Lausitz Science Park (LSP), which will make a significant contribution to research into hybrid-electric systems. A central component of the LSP is the chesco research factory.
Another important project is the Medical University of Lausitz – Carl Thiem (MUL-CT), which will begin training doctors in 2026/27. This image underlines the comprehensive strategy that aims to strengthen both the region's scientific and medical infrastructure.
Economic opportunities and recommendations
Investments in structural change in Lusatia amount to over ten billion euros, which is expected to create thousands of new jobs. The fourth report deals with the role of science in structural change and the associated economic perspectives. Recommendations to increase the chances of success include improved access for international students to the labor market as well as the necessary investments in social and structural infrastructure for incoming skilled workers.
Furthermore, there is an appeal for the long-term nature of the Lausitz Science Park in order to support start-ups and technology-oriented companies. Scientists view these investments as a regional economic stimulus program that is intended to have long-term positive effects.
Accompanying research and policy briefs
The structural change in Lusatia has been scientifically supported by the BTU and the Leibniz Institute for Economic Research since the end of 2021. As a result, four policy briefs have already been written on various aspects of structural change. This regular scientific support is intended to continuously improve the framework conditions for change in the region.
In summary, it can be said that Lusatia is facing profound change, which is characterized by massive investments in science and infrastructure. The challenges are great, but the strategies and recommendations from the current reports could bring a sustainable economic recovery to the region.
