Bremen Big Data Challenge: Win up to 500 euros for smart minds!

The tenth Bremen Big Data Challenge (BBDC) was launched today, March 8, 2025, by the Cognitive Systems Lab at the University of Bremen. This competition is aimed at university members and employees of partner companies and offers a platform for data analysis, in particular for identifying patterns and fraudsters in simulated bank transaction data.

Registration is possible until March 31st and can be done via the official website of the competition. Participants can compete either as individuals or in teams of up to three people. Prize money totaling 1,500 euros as well as attractive non-cash prizes are reserved for the winners.

Competition categories and prizes

The competition is divided into two main categories:

  • Student Track: Dieser richtet sich an Studierende, die Programmierkenntnisse mitbringen. Keine vorherigen Erfahrungen im Bereich Big Data sind erforderlich, und die Teilnahme kann auf das Studium angerechnet werden.
  • Professional Track: Hier sind Hochschulmitarbeitende sowie Mitarbeitende von Sponsoren, Supportern und Alumni eingeladen. Auch Studierende können an diesem Track teilnehmen.

Particular recognition awaits the participants of the Student Track, who are supported by sponsors such as “JUST ADD AI”, “neuland – Büro für Informatik”, “Die Sparkasse Bremen” and “Tagaia”. The cash prizes range from 100 euros for 5th place to 500 euros for 1st place. In addition, the winning teams receive trophies, while places 1 to 5 are awarded medals. Non-cash prizes will be distributed to the 30 best teams.

Cooperation and support

The task is developed in close collaboration with the Sparkasse Bremen. The competition is also supported by the scientific focus “Minds, Media, Machines”, which is based at the University of Bremen. This reflects the institutions' commitment to promoting innovative approaches to data analytics and supporting talent in the region.

The competition, which is also considered one of the most important events in Bremen's innovation scene, shows the ongoing interest in big data and its applications in the financial sector. The challenges of the challenge give participants the opportunity to demonstrate their skills in a practical environment.
