Return of the Physics Library: Old rooms, new learning opportunities!
On October 1, 2025, the physics/electrical engineering department library was moved back to its old location in NW1. This return comes after a temporary relocation to the headquarters of the Bremen State and University Library (SuUB), which was necessary to create space for the law library. The SuUB expressed its thanks to the Physics/Electrical Engineering Department, which made rooms available for the Juridicum during this time. The move of the physics and electrical engineering book collections was carried out by a specialized moving company.
With the reopening, the department library will be accessible daily from Monday to Friday between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. from October 6, 2025. Spread across around 36,000 volumes, students will find modern learning and work spaces on the ground floor and on the intermediate levels. There are 80 workstations and a group work room available here. The information center is staffed during opening hours by employees who offer support with literature searches and service offerings. Director Maria Elisabeth Müller praised the department's patience and support during the organizational change.
Background to the move
The need to close the physics/electrical engineering department library during the renovation work in the Juridicum resulted from a comprehensive fire protection and pollutant remediation project that had to be completed by the end of June 2021. The Juridicum is an important reference library and the second largest location of the SuUB, where law students spend a lot of time. During the renovation work, around 120,000 volumes were removed from the Juridicum. Around 40,000 of the volumes were temporarily relocated to the physics/electrical engineering library.
The relocation presented SuUB with logistical challenges. The move included storing holdings in the book stack and integrating around 4,500 volumes into the open access collection of the central library. Special moving companies were commissioned to make the moves efficient and professional, which further ensured that the order and inventory packaging were correctly maintained Friedrich moving provides information about the variety of services to ensure a smooth move.
Future perspectives
After the renovation work, the Juridicum is expected to move to the Forum am Domshof in January 2025, which should represent a final solution to the spatial situation of the legal holdings. The relocation of the physics/electrical engineering department library is seen as an important step in giving students back access to specialist literature and workplaces in a familiar environment. The measures implemented and logistical challenges during this time provide an interesting insight into the complexity of library management in times of restructuring.
