Festive enrollment: Bucerius Law School welcomes new students

On September 26, 2025, the academic celebration of the Bucerius Law School took place in the festive setting of the Chamber of Commerce ballroom. New students, their families and friends, doctoral students as well as members of the university management, professors and employees of the university gathered at this special event. The guests of honor also included representatives from politics and the judiciary, who paid attention to the importance of this educational institution. The President of the Bucerius Law School, Prof. Dr. Michael Grünberger, highlighted the themes of joy of opportunity and solidarity in his speech and emphasized the importance of solidarity as a maxim for action.

The Bucerius Law School, founded in 2000 by the ZEIT Foundation Gerd and Ebelin Bucerius, is a privately financed, state-recognized university with a focus on national and international business law, including European and Anglo-American law. Around 100 study places are available every year, and the training includes a four-year course of study that ends with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) and the first state examination in law ( hamburg.de ).

Greetings and speech

In the greetings of the various speakers, the university's connection to society was discussed. Maryam Blumenthal, Senator for Science, Research and Equality, recalled that the education at Bucerius Law School focuses strongly on social responsibility. Prof. Manuel J. Hartung, from the ZEIT STIFTUNG BUCERIUS, referred to the historical figure Gerd Bucerius and emphasized the importance of freedom in education. Dr. Anne-Kathrin Bertke, President of Bucerius Alumni e.V., emphasized the importance of character and mutual support among students.

A highlight of the celebration was the speech by Prof. Dr. Stephan Harbarth, President of the Federal Constitutional Court. He spoke about the fundamental role of social support for the democratic order and the responsibility of the Bucerius Law School in training legal ethics as well as the need for understandable legal communication.

Enrollment and doctoral awards

The ceremonial matriculation of the new students was an emotional highlight. A tradition of signing on stage also provided moving moments for the parents present. Eike Weimann, General Secretary of the Student Representative Council, took the opportunity to talk about everyday student life at Bucerius Law School.

Particularly honored was Dr. Stephan Zündorf, who received the doctoral award from the NOERR law firm for his dissertation on the “restructuring decision”. A total of 43 doctoral candidates were delighted to receive their awards.

Changes and musical accompaniment

Another important point was the nomination of the new Vice President, Prof. Dr. Jörn Axel Kämmerer, who will be responsible for international affairs from January 2026. The event was accompanied by musical performances by the Bucerius Big Band and by Dr. Alexa Meyer-Hamme moderates.

Finally, the new students were expressed their best wishes for an exciting start to their studies, and the doctoral students were blessed with much success on their further path. The event highlighted Bucerius Law School's connection to its tradition and commitment to society, which came to life through the words and actions of everyone involved.
