The ceremonial handover of the Germany scholarships took place on October 18, 2023 at HafenCity University Hamburg (HCU). At this event, 35 students received their certificates in the Holcim Auditorium. Representatives of the supporting companies as well as Prof. Dr. Jörg Pohlan, member of the selection jury, was present to congratulate the scholarship holders. Uwe Heinrich Suhr, a long-time supporter of the program, warmly welcomed the students and sponsors.
The Deutschlandstipendium, which has existed since 2011, supports high-performing students from various disciplines and creates a public-private partnership between state universities and sponsors. As part of the program, private sponsors and the federal government process the funding distributed equally. Each scholarship holder receives 300 euros per month, half of which is provided by sponsors such as the EUROPA-CENTER Uwe Heinrich Suhr Foundation or the Henri Benthack Foundation, while the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) matches the other half. This enables the scholarship holders to study more independently.
Diverse funding opportunities and requirements
A total of 42 scholarships can be awarded at HCU for the 2023/24 funding period. The selection of scholarship holders is not only based on academic success, but also takes into account voluntary commitment and personal life hurdles. One criterion for the award is the willingness to take responsibility and overcome obstacles in the educational path. This selection is made by a jury made up of HCU professors, student representatives and external members. In Hamburg, over 600 students have now received support since the program began.
In addition to financial support, many universities, including HCU, also offer non-material aid. These include, for example, mentoring programs and networking events. These offers serve to provide scholarship holders with the best possible support in their academic and professional careers.
A celebration of exchange and networking
After the official handover of the certificates, a summer party took place on the university's Elbe terrace, which was attended by around 400 scholarship holders and guests from Hamburg's universities. The festival not only served as a celebration, but also promoted networking between the scholarship holders and the exchange between the various universities. Musical contributions from students from the University of Hamburg and the Hamburg University of Music and Theater enriched the event and contributed to a festive atmosphere.
The Deutschlandstipendium is not only an important aid for many students, but has also developed into an important instrument for university funding in Germany. Participation in this scholarship program is independent of personal or parental income and nationality and represents valuable support for talented and committed young people who want to achieve their academic goals.
