Pure sustainability: University of Hamburg starts an exciting week of events!

The University of Hamburg is preparing for the second edition of Sustainability Week, which will take place from June 2nd to 6th, 2025 in the innovative Tiny House on the Von-Melle-Park campus. This series of events, organized by the Sustainability Office, aims to reach students, researchers, teachers, university employees and the interested public. The first week in June promises a diverse program that not only includes lectures and workshops, but also offers an open platform for the exchange of current research results.

How uni-hamburg.de reported, the event begins with the live broadcast of the Hamburg Sustainability Conference. The highlights of the week will be a discussion in the main church of St. Katharinen, in which, among other things, the endangerment of the oceans will be discussed. Experts like Prof. Dr. Dirk Notz, Steffi Lemke and Birte Lorenzen-Herrmann are part of these important conversations that deal with the challenges of environmental policy.

Extensive programming

The program also includes a science slam with the theme “Act sustainably, create socially, connect digitally”. Here participants have the opportunity to present creative approaches to promoting sustainability. In addition, the event will also offer repair options and posture analysis on the occasion of World Bicycle Day.

A central element of Sustainability Week is the Open Plenum 6.0, which will discuss the current status of the transformation towards greater sustainability and present the latest research results. Prof. Dr. Hauke Heekeren highlights the university's responsibility and emphasizes the immense importance of interdisciplinary dialogue for sustainable approaches in science.

Sustainability in science

The initiative, which is supported by the University of Hamburg, is in line with the goals of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), which aims to promote a culture of innovation for sustainability at universities. As part of the “Sustainability in Science” initiative, numerous projects are being launched at more than 35 universities to promote change with innovative research and best practice projects.

Students are encouraged to actively contribute to the climate neutrality of their universities. In addition, new approaches for low-emission mobility management and resource-saving procurement are being developed by employees in universities and research institutions. These measures also integrate regional actors, which strengthens cooperation between research and practice.

  • Beispielprojekte:

Efforts towards sustainability in science will be further supported by the establishment of a society for transdisciplinary and participatory research. This aims to combine the everyday knowledge of the population with scientific findings, which increases the practical applicability of innovations.

The next few weeks promise not only an interesting event at the University of Hamburg, but also a fundamental discourse about the role of science in society and its responsibility for a more sustainable future. If you are looking for more information and registration options, you can find it on the university's sustainability pages.
