Sustainability: Strategies for a fair future in climate protection!

Today's world faces significant challenges in the area of sustainable development. How Leuphana reports, the crises related to sustainability are anchored in politics, business, science and civil society. Eric Hartmann, an expert in this field, emphasizes the urgency of implementing sustainability strategies quickly and efficiently. He sees sustainability not just as an ecological problem, but as a question of justice that strives for fair institutions for current and future generations.

In order to meet these challenges, solid conceptual foundations in scientific research are urgently needed. Hartmann examined existing and possible strategies. According to him, previous approaches include concepts such as sufficiency, efficiency and consistency, with the aim of reducing ecological damage.

Strategies for a sustainable future

Hartmann identifies a total of ten different strategies, divided into intragenerational and intergenerational approaches. While the intragenerational strategies address urgent needs such as food, shelter and warmth, the intergenerational ones aim to leave a livable world for future generations. He sees sustainability as a comprehensive concept that makes it possible to meet basic needs without causing excessive ecological damage.

In addition to the already established strategies, new approaches such as regeneration, equalization and empowerment of people should also be included in the discussion. Hartmann plans to shed more light on the empirical investigation of these sustainability strategies and their implementation, particularly with regard to climate policy in Germany, in a future publication.

The German sustainability strategy

In the context of German sustainability policy, the federal government has developed a comprehensive strategy that is based on the objectives of the 2030 Agenda. This includes 17 global sustainability goals (SDGs), which Germany should implement both in its own country and offer support to international partner countries. How Federal Government informed, the German sustainability strategy has already been further developed several times, most recently on March 10, 2021.

The focus of this development is complex and includes, among other things, human well-being, social justice and measures for the energy transition and climate protection. A flexible interaction between ministries, sustainability actors and civil society should ensure success. This strategy not only provides the basis for political reform, but also a change in the behavior of companies and consumers.

By adopting Agenda 21 in 1992 and the first sustainability strategy in 2002, which was also adopted at the UN conference in Rio de Janeiro, Germany committed itself to finding new ways to overcome the challenges of today.

Loud BMZ Sustainability means meeting the needs of the present without restricting the possibilities of future generations. This three-dimensional perspective of economic efficiency, social justice and ecological sustainability should form the basis of all political decisions in order to secure global resources in the long term. Implementation experience shows that more sustainable practices are possible, but there is still a lot to be done to achieve the ambitious goals.
