New impulse for Hamburg: Lecture by Professor Gess on urban planning!

On Wednesday, April 23, 2025, the HafenCity University Hamburg (HCU) will invite you to an important lecture at 6:00 p.m. The speaker, Univ.-Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Alessandro Gess will speak about current topics in architecture and urban planning under the title “urban after all”. Gess, who will take up a professorship for design, spatial and building science at the HCU on November 1, 2024, brings an impressive background to the audience, having already worked at various renowned institutions.

His academic training includes studying architecture at the Technical University of Munich and at the École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Versailles. He also received further training in urban planning at the Institut d’études politiques de Paris (Sciences Po). Professionally, Gess was a partner in the l’AUC office in Paris, where he worked as an architect and urban planner and implemented numerous projects. He was awarded the Patrick Abercrombie Prize for Urban Planning and Design, an award presented by the International Union of Architects.

Research focus and teaching activities

Alessandro Gess's areas of expertise include design, spatial and building theory, where he deals with situational and metropolitan tasks. His research places a critical focus on social, environmental and economic challenges arising in urbanization and city planning.
