Prof. Dr. Oliver Heese was re-elected dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the Medical School Hamburg (MSH) in June 2025. He has been working at this institution since 2019 and holds the professorship for clinical medicine – neurosurgery. His involvement extends to the development of the human medicine course, in which he has been actively involved since 2012. At MSH, he significantly influenced the overall development of the university. Previously, he was head of the Department of Human Medicine, Dean and Chief Physician of the Clinic for Neurosurgery and Spinal Surgery at the Helios Clinics in Schwerin.

The expertise of Prof. Dr. Heese, one of the leading neurologists in Germany, is of great importance for medical training at the MSH. He speaks English and German fluently and has more than 21 years of professional experience. His areas of expertise include neuro-oncology, trigeminal neuralgia and vascular neurosurgery. Today he continues to work at the Helios Medical Group in Germany and draws valuable insights into academic teaching from his broad clinical experience.

Research and training

Prof. Dr. Heese earned his MD degree from the University of Lübeck and completed a specialization in neurology at a renowned institute in Germany. His academic career also includes a doctorate at the University of Lübeck as well as the completion of a professorship and postdoctoral thesis. He also holds an MBA in health economics from the University of Hamburg, which further underlines his comprehensive qualifications.

He began his professional career at the neurology department at the Medical University of Lübeck and continued his training with a residency at the neurology department at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School in the USA. From 2000 to 2004 he worked as a senior consultant at the University Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf. Since 2011 he has headed the Department of Neurosurgery and Spinal Surgery at Helios Medical Group.

Memberships and publications

Prof. Dr. Heese is a member of several professional societies and working groups, including the neuro-oncological working groups in Germany and the Cancer Commission in Hamburg. He is also involved in the German Subcranial Society and the German Society for Skull Base Surgery. His active research activity is reflected in several scientific publications in national and international journals.
