Groundbreaking ceremony celebrated for new educational building at Bucerius Law School!
On Friday, September 12, 2025, the groundbreaking ceremony for a new building at Bucerius Law School took place. The event was organized by the university administration, students and the ZEIT STIFTUNG BUCERIUS. The new building will be built on the site of a former parking lot and will represent a new entrance to the Bucerius Campus. Plans include a large lecture hall for 200 people, modern classrooms and a daycare center, which will serve as the new home for the campus daycare center in the future.
The building, which is being realized on an area of 4,400 square meters, is intended to combine teaching, research and public events. The client, the ZEIT STIFTUNG BUCERIUS, is represented by chairman Prof. Manuel J. Hartung. In his speech, Hartung emphasized the great importance of the project for both the university and the city of Hamburg as a whole.
Significance of the new building
Prof. Dr. Michael Grünberger, President of Bucerius Law School, spoke about the symbolism of the groundbreaking and the “feeling of togetherness” among the students. He also welcomed the new students and expressed the hope that they will inaugurate the new building soon. Benedikt Landgrebe, Managing Director of Bucerius Law School, highlighted the long planning process that began in 2017. Hartung and Landgrebe agreed that patience and understanding are crucial to realizing the project.
Prof. Dr. Burkhard Schwenker, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the ZEIT STIFTUNG BUCERIUS, emphasized the relevance of the new building for the training of excellent lawyers and for research. The new building will not only help to improve study conditions, but also expand the prevailing research landscape. After the greetings, a photo opportunity took place and the audience was treated to ice cream.
Review and outlook
It was the last groundbreaking ceremony for the Bucerius Law School 20 years ago, when the construction phase for the first new building began in autumn 2005, which opened on June 11, 2007. This building included important facilities such as the library, cafeteria and lecture halls, which contributed significantly to the development of the campus. With the new building, the university will once again strengthen its position and respond to the challenges of the future.
The plans for the campus are part of a larger vision that also affects other educational institutions in Germany. Developments such as the redesign of the Johannes Gutenberg University also contributed to international competitiveness. These initial plans began as early as the 1960s, which shows how long educational innovation processes in higher education can take.
The groundbreaking ceremony at Bucerius Law School marks a significant step forward in a time characterized by change and the need to adapt teaching and research to the needs of students and society.
