Violence, racism and gender: discourses that divide our society

On May 27, 2025, social discourse will be shaped by a variety of sensitive topics that have become more important in recent years. In particular, the need to combat anti-Semitism and racism is more relevant than ever. That's how it reports Cornelia Goethe Center for Gender Studies about the rampant xenophobic sentiment that is amplified not only during election periods but also on social media.

Terms such as “remigration” and “Biodeutsch”, which have been considered non-words in recent years, illustrate the protective retreat into national identities. These linguistic changes are related to increasing anti-Semitism and new discourses about migration and racism. The terrorist attacks in Hanau and Halle are important examples that illustrate the violent potential of such issues.

Current research and events

The current research focuses on gender-related, (hetero-)sexist, homophobic and trans*phobic as well as homonationalist logics that are closely linked to racist and anti-Semitic practices. These topics will be discussed in more detail as part of the CGColloquium, which will take place in the summer semester of 2025. The first date on May 7, 2025 will include a conversation between Nadia Butt and Paladia Ziss about “Mobility, migration, and gender: representations that matter”.

The other event calendar offers numerous exciting lectures, including:

  • 4. Juni 2025: Vortrag von Claudia Machold über „Kindheit und Rassismus“
  • 4. Juni 2025: Vortrag von Saba-Nur Cheema zur „empirischen Perspektive auf antisemitische Differenzpraktiken unter Kindern“
  • 11. Juni 2025: Menina Ugwuoke und Nazli Aghazadeh-Wegener thematisieren intersektionale Perspektiven
  • 25. Juni 2025: Astrid Erll und Teresa Koloma Beck über Erinnerungskulturen in der postmigrantischen Gesellschaft
  • 9. Juli 2025: Annäherungen von Pädagog*innen of Color und jüdischen Aktivist*innen
  • 16. Juli 2025: Eine Diskussion über Solidaritätspraxen und multidirektionales Erinnern

All events are free of charge and take place either on the Westend campus of the Goethe University Frankfurt am Main or online via ZOOM. Interested participants have the opportunity to ask questions and enter into dialogue.

The discussion about social violence and how to deal with anti-Semitism and racism is a necessary part of public discourse today. A clear focus on gender studies and intersectional approaches could help find solutions to these challenges. The publication also contains more information on these topics German Society for Sociology.

In summary, it can be said that the upcoming events offer space for critical questions as well as for interdisciplinary exchange. For anyone who wants to deal with these complex topics, it is worthwhile to become part of these discourses and take an active part.
