A remarkable donation to preserve the “Green House” in Giessen was announced today. In a ceremonial handover, Prof. Dr. Volker Wissemann and Dr. Hans-Ulrich Althaus, the President of the Justus Liebig University (JLU), Prof. Dr. Katharina Lorenz, an amount of 20,000 euros. This generous donation is part of a comprehensive commitment to the restoration of the listed building, which plays a central role in the connection between nature, science and society, says Prof. Lorenz.
The initiative to support the “Green House” has its origins in the Rotary Club Gießen-Altes Schloss, which organized a benefit concert in July 2025. This concert included a varied program from classical to popular music, moderated by Carsten Scherließ. The proceeds will help build a total base of 400,000 euros for the necessary restoration. During the handover, Prof. Wissemann emphasized the citizens' great identification with the “Green House”, which is widely known for its colorful maiden vine.
