International students conquer Marburg: A look at the IUSP!

On April 16, 2025, 23 students from the USA, Canada and Japan explored the Philipps University of Marburg and the German educational landscape. These students are part of the International Undergraduate Study Program (IUSP), designed as an exchange study program adapted to the international academic calendar. Participants come from renowned partner universities, including institutions in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania State University and Victoria University in Australia.

During the 2025 summer semester, students will be welcomed to a diverse program of lectures, seminars and tutorials on the German language and culture. Excursions to Berlin and Dresden as well as other sights in Hesse are also planned.

An establishment with history

The Philipps University of Marburg, founded in 1527, is the oldest university in the world, which was founded as a Protestant university and has been an important place for research and teaching for almost five centuries. It is known that the IUSP does not require any prior knowledge of German and offers an intensive German language program for all levels. Additionally, students can take electives from regular courses taught primarily in English.

The program offers special cultural activities, including evening lectures on relevant topics, that promote students' full integration into German culture. Students take part in a language-intensive introductory course in the first six weeks of the program, which is combined with history and culture courses.

Academic requirements and integration

The academic requirements in the IUSP program differ from those in the United States. Lectures are often larger and focus on lectures, with grades awarded primarily based on a final exam. A full study program includes 60 ECTS credits per year or 30 credits per semester.

To receive 4 Lake Forest credits, students must take 23 ECTS credits; 17 ECTS credits are sufficient for 3 credits. The course description will be published at a later date, with the first publication scheduled for spring semester courses in January for the following semester. Students can apply for a semester or a whole year.

This year IUSP celebrates its 20th anniversary, and over the past two decades students from many different countries have participated in the program. The partner universities play an important role in this by creating free exchange places for Marburg students. Further information is available on the University of Marburg website.

German universities, including Philipps University, offer courses worldwide that meet the high German standards. Study programs are available in over 60 countries and are supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Graduates of these programs have excellent career opportunities both abroad and in Germany.

In summary, the IUSP program promotes student exchange and strengthens academic collaboration between different cultures. This initiative helps foster international relationships and provide students with valuable experiences that will enrich their professional careers.
