Anniversary conference: Art History Institute celebrates 110 years of success!
A conference will take place at the Art History Institute of the Goethe University Frankfurt am Main from March 27th to 28th, 2025 that will deal with the early phase of the institute. This event is held as part of the retirement of three influential personalities of the institute - Hans Aurenhammer, Regine Prange and Jochen Sander. However, despite its significant size and role in art history, the Institute itself remains under-researched, underscoring the need for this exchange. [puk.uni-frankfurt.de] reports that the institute was founded in 1915 shortly after the founding of Frankfurt University.
A central theme of the conference will be the examination of the connections between art history education and museums, with the focus on the conceptual, pragmatic and personal interaction. The aim is not only to shed light on the intellectual biographies of important actors, but also to highlight similarities with the Hamburg Art History Seminar, which also shares a Jewish exile history. [arthist.net] adds that this conference will take place in an expanded and comparative perspective.

The context of the conference
Conferences like this not only promote academic discourse in art history, but also offer the opportunity for exchange and network building. They bring together experts in a field and promote interdisciplinary collaboration. In this sense, [kunstgeschichte.info] emphasizes that such events usually include lectures, workshops and excursions and thus enable a wide range of knowledge and experiences to be exchanged.
Given the deep intertwining of art history with contemporary museology, the conference is seen not only as a review but also as a further reflection on important questions of art education and the role of museums in the 21st century.
