Kassel University honors Prof. Dr. Däuper as new honorary professor!
On March 20, 2025, the ceremonial appointment of Prof. Dr. Olaf Däuper was appointed honorary professor at the Institute for Business Law (IWR). The certificate was given to him by Prof. Dr. Björn Frank, dean of the Faculty of Economics. Professor Däuper expressed his gratitude and emphasized the honor of continuing his commitment in the new role. He would also like to expressly thank Prof. Gerrit Hornung and the team at the IWR for their support.
Prof. Gerrit Hornung, a colleague at the IWR, emphasized the importance of Professor Däuper for teaching within Kassel law. As a lawyer and partner at Becker Büttner Held, Professor Däuper was able to contribute his expertise in the areas of energy and antitrust law as well as regulatory, infrastructure and planning law. He has been teaching at the IWR since 2017 and has thus made a lasting contribution to the university's academic work.
Focus on climate protection and energy
Professor Däuper’s teaching is particularly important in the context of current reforms in climate protection and energy law. The challenges in the area of climate protection are immense, especially in the context of international agreements such as the Kyoto Protocol of 1997 and the Paris Agreement of 2015, which aim to keep global temperature increases below 2°C. As part of these international commitments, Germany has committed to setting national targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. These objectives are also part of the Federal Climate Protection Act, which envisages net greenhouse gas neutrality by 2045.
One law that is of central importance is the Act Against Restraints of Competition (GWB), which has been updated in several editions over the years. The 14th edition, edited by Prof. Dr. Hermann-Josef Bunte, takes into account important changes such as the 10th amendment to the GWB, which came into force on January 19, 2021. Among other things, this reform has tightened the supervision of abuse of companies with market power and expanded the ability of the antitrust authorities to regulate large digital platforms.
Legal framework for climate protection
The legal instruments for combating climate change in Germany are diverse. The National Energy Efficiency Action Plan and the 2030 Climate Protection Program aim to reduce energy consumption and promote the expansion of renewable energies. In addition, the Federal Constitutional Court stipulates that the Bundestag defines a legal reduction path to achieve the climate goals after 2030. Federal states have also enacted specific climate protection laws, which, among other things, require the creation of climate protection programs.
The political and legal instruments that have been developed at the EU level and nationally in Germany are crucial to achieving the ambitious climate goals. A mix of regulatory, planning and economic instruments should help to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The Federal Environment Agency plays a central role here by providing research services and advising ministries in order to develop targeted measures that are in line with international obligations.
Overall, the appointment of Prof. Dr. Olaf Däuper not only emphasizes the importance of his role at the University of Kassel, but also illustrates the ongoing effort to continuously improve the legal framework in the areas of climate, energy and antitrust law in order to meet the current challenges of climate change. At this interface, academic teaching and practical application of law come together to make a lasting contribution.
