New congress in Giessen: Focus on progress for muscle sufferers!
The 27th Congress of the Medical-Scientific Advisory Board of the German Society for Muscular Patients. V. (DGM) will take place in Gießen from March 19th to 21st, 2025. The congress management is led by the experienced doctors Prof. Dr. med. Anne Schänzer, Prof. Dr. Heidrun Krämer-Best and Prof. Dr. med. Andreas Hahn took over. The thematic focus is on “Precise diagnostics & personalized therapy for neuromuscular diseases”. The aim of the congress is to promote optimal and timely care for patients with neuromuscular diseases through close interdisciplinary collaboration.
Experts from various disciplines, including pediatric neurology, neurology, neuropathology, human genetics, rheumatology, orthopedics, rehabilitation medicine, respiratory medicine, palliative medicine and intensive care, will present and discuss new findings at the congress. In Germany, over 100,000 people are affected by neuromuscular diseases; around 800 different diseases are known. The DGM is the largest and oldest German self-help organization for people with neuromuscular diseases and has around 10,000 members.
Interdisciplinary approaches and therapy options
The congress not only promotes exchange between different disciplines, but also the development of suitable therapies and medications for the treatment of neuromuscular diseases. The focus is particularly on new treatment methods, such as gene therapies and gene silencing, which are already being used for hereditary diseases. Advances in drug therapy in recent years have brought significant improvements in the treatment of diseases such as spinal muscular atrophy. These therapies can have a decisive influence on the course and prognosis of the disease if used early.
Furthermore, non-drug therapies, such as physical therapy and speech therapy, are considered important. Accurate diagnosis is emphasized as crucial for individualized therapy. The congress offers trade visitors the opportunity to examine new methods in research and diagnostics and to gain practical experience in skills labs and young investigator workshops.
Patient specialist day: “Become an expert in your own matter”
In addition to the congress, a patient specialist day will take place on March 22, 2025 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This day is aimed at those affected, relatives and interested parties and has the motto “Become an expert in your own case – how can I organize my own care?” The program includes lectures, interactive workshops and an expert panel that offers space for discussions and exchange of experiences.
