New course offering: JLU and NaUKMA strengthen Ukrainian future!

On October 6, 2025, Prof. Katharina Lorenz from the Justus Liebig University of Gießen (JLU) and Prof. Sergiy Kvit from the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy (NaUKMA) signed an important agreement on the “NaUKMA teaching” pilot project. This innovative project aims to enable Ukrainian refugee children to study in a safe environment while strengthening their ties to their homeland. The first twelve students will begin their studies at NaUKMA in Giessen in the winter semester of 2025/26.

The participants in this project have graduated from school in Ukraine and have regularly applied for the bachelor's degree at NaUKMA. Thanks to the cooperation between JLU and NaUKMA, these students can study at the Ukrainian university in their native language, while JLU provides the necessary infrastructure and accepts the students as exchange students. NaUKMA lecturers will work as guest lecturers at JLU, further deepening the close connection between the two institutions.

Long-term partnership and support

The JLU has had close ties to partner universities in Ukraine for over a decade and has already welcomed 500 Ukrainian students, researchers and lecturers following the outbreak of the Russian war of aggression. This initiative is part of a larger commitment by JLU, which, among other things, supports the introduction of liberal arts and sciences degree programs at Ukrainian universities. The NaUKMA is in charge of this project.

As part of the “Designing and Implementing Liberal Arts Studies in Ukraine” project, which is funded by the EU as part of the Erasmus+ program, new interdisciplinary bachelor's programs for Ukrainian students are to be developed. A kick-off meeting for this project took place at JLU in December 2024, bringing together high-ranking representatives from JLU and other Ukrainian and European partner institutions.

A comprehensive network of partners

Other participating universities from Ukraine include institutions in Zaporizhzhya, Poltava, Ternopil and Izmail. European partner universities such as Maastricht University, the Bratislava International School of Liberal Arts as well as the University of Warsaw and the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan enrich the network. The projects also receive support from the European Association for Liberal Arts and Sciences (ECOLAS), the Ukrainian Ministry of Education (MESU) and the National Agency for Higher Education Quality Assurance (NAQA).

The overarching goal of these measures is to promote future Ukrainian students who are able to think in an interdisciplinary manner and actively address social challenges. JLU has been offering the “Liberal Arts and Sciences” bachelor’s degree program since the winter semester of 2023/24, which deals with topics such as sustainability, digitalization and social change.

By choosing individual focuses after a joint orientation year, students can acquire both a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Sciences. These educational offerings are aimed at committed young people who want to be actively involved in society.

Overall, this committed project shows how education can serve as an important contribution to overcoming current challenges and strengthening communities. The JLU and NaUKMA are thus setting an example for international cooperation and support for students in crisis situations.
