Reconstruction started: New rapid cycle connection for Kassel-Vellmar!
On June 10, 2025, reconstruction work for the Kassel-Vellmar rapid cycle connection will begin in Kassel. This was announced by the University of Kassel in a statement. The construction site will be set up in the area of the central campus at Holländischer Platz. The first construction phase extends from the parking lot at the university to the junction with Holländische Straße.
In the coming weeks, the work is expected to have a negative impact on the accessibility of the parking lot at the university and the parking spaces along Gottschalkstrasse. Despite the restrictions, pedestrian traffic is largely maintained. Access to the construction site is only accessible to a limited extent from the start of construction at 7:00 a.m. until around 5:00 p.m. Customers must also ensure that no vehicles are allowed to be parked in the construction area.
Planned construction phases and infrastructure
During the course of the construction work, a total of six construction phases will be planned, which are divided into the following areas:
- Bauabschnitt 1: Parkplatz an der Uni/Ecke Henschelstraße bis Einmündung Holländische Straße
- Bauabschnitt 2: Henschelstraße bis Moritzstraße
- Bauabschnitt 3: Gottschalkstraße zwischen Moritzstraße und Ludwigstraße
- Bauabschnitt 4: Gottschalkstraße zwischen Ludwigstraße und Westring
- Bauabschnitt 5: Gottschalkstraße zwischen Westring und Mombachstraße
- Bauabschnitt 6: Mombachstraße zwischen Mombachstraße 13 bis Einmündung Fiedlerstraße
This rapid cycle connection will have a total length of 660 meters, with a cycle road with a usable core lane width of 4.50 meters being planned. The expansion is carried out in accordance with the quality standards for cycling and local mobility in Hesse. Longitudinal parking spaces and special parking spaces for bicycles, including cargo bikes, are also provided. To improve the lighting situation, new mast locations are being set up.
Environmental and safety aspects
An important aspect of the renovation is street drainage. The results of the analysis have already been incorporated into the planning to integrate newly placed road drains into the safety separation strip. In addition, the road surface will be asphalted, while intersection areas will be colored red to reinforce priority control.
In order to increase the quality of stay, seating options are planned on Mombachstrasse and Gottschalkstrasse. The sidewalks will be widened, especially in areas with cafés and restaurants, to create a multifunctional usage concept. Another focus is on the tree population, which should be integrated into areas to promote green infrastructure. Alternative tree discs can be made from insensitive materials.
