20 years of Rostock Children's University: Exciting discoveries for little researchers!

June 19, 2025 marks a special occasion for the Rostock Children's University. On this day, the institution's 20th anniversary will be celebrated in the Audimax on the Ulmencampus at Ulmenstraße 69. Entry opens at 2:45 p.m., followed by a surprise lecture starting at 3:00 p.m. Entry to the event is free for all children ages 6 to 12.

In this festive setting, an exciting program awaits the little guests. During the surprise lecture there will be five mini-lectures on the topics of magic, suspense, animals and action. The event promises interactive elements that invite you to experiment, be amazed and puzzle along.

Summer festival and participation offers

After the lecture, the children can take part in the summer festival, which offers numerous activities and games. There are also special birthday surprises for the little guests. The Rostock Children's University, which has enjoyed great popularity since it was founded in 2002, has made it its mission to give children early access to higher education. These events are not only educational events for children, but also an opportunity to involve parents in the educational world of universities and to promote the social anchoring of universities.

A role model for other universities

Similar to the Rostock Children's University, which has successfully established itself as an educational offering, the first children's university was founded in Tübingen in 2002. The concept has now spread to most universities and is primarily aimed at students in grades five to eight. Professor Gregor Markl from the University of Tübingen plans to show the same pictures presented at the children's university to his students and possibly offer an adapted lecture.

The lectures are free, but not for free: the children receive a small study book that can be filled with stamps. After completing the events, they receive a diploma that entitles them to follow-up events and to receive additional materials.

In this context, professors answer big questions in a child-friendly way and offer a platform for exchange that is also open to questions from children. The children's universities thus increase the visibility of the respective university and its valuable work. The goal is clear: to open it up to children who do not naturally have access to university and at the same time to awaken interest in science and education.
