German university championship in canoe polo: Rostock is fighting for the title!

The anticipation is increasing: The German University Championship in canoe polo will take place on May 17th and 18th, 2025 in the Rostock River Pool. The host is the General German University Sports Association. A total of eight teams will compete against each other this weekend, including two teams from the University of Rostock, known as Rostock 1 and Rostock 2. Other universities such as Cologne, Kassel, Aachen and Hanover are also represented.

The ambitious participants are fighting for the title of German University Champion 2025. Last year's winner, the German Sport University Cologne, will also try to defend its title. The tournament will be held in two blocks on both days: on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and on Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Admission to the event is free, and visitors have the opportunity to purchase catering, including food and beverages, on site.

Event details and team lineup

The canoe polo event will be characterized by exciting encounters. Participating teams are:

  • Rostock 1
  • Rostock 2
  • Team Köln
  • Team Kassel
  • Team Aachen
  • Team Hannover

This championship represents a return for Rostock university sports, as they have not taken part in the DHM in canoe polo since 2019. In the last competitions, Rostock 1 finished in 14th place and Rostock 2 in 20th place. The tension is even more noticeable now that the team is striving to improve.

Courses and community

The University of Rostock actively promotes the sport of canoe polo through three courses and a voluntary game meeting on the weekend. These activities not only provide athletic training, but also a strong sense of community among the participants.

The 15th Rostock Canoe Polo Tournament will take place at the same time as the competitions. Teams from Greifswald, Bielefeld, Bremen and Neustrelitz will also compete here and contribute to the atmosphere of the event.

Canoe polo itself is considered an exciting sport that is often described as “rugby on the water”. Two teams compete against each other in a 5-on-5 format to get the ball into a goal. The upcoming World Championships will take place in October in Deqing, China, where interest in canoe polo continues to grow. The German Sport University Cologne will also have athletes on the national team at this World Cup.

Spectators are cordially invited to come to the Rostock River Pool to experience the exciting atmosphere of the German University Canoe Polo Championships live.
