Hanover and MHH: Strong alliance for health research and education!
The Hannover Medical School (MHH) and the Hannover Region signed a significant declaration of intent on September 16, 2025, which aims to achieve more effective collaboration in the areas of research, teaching, and further education. MHH President Denise Hilfiker-Kleiner and Region President Steffen Krach are the driving forces behind this project. MHH reports that the partnership includes a planned competence center for public health, primary health care and health care research.
This cooperation is intended to further expand and strengthen the existing cooperation between the MHH and the Hanover region. Joint lectures, specialist conferences and research projects are planned that will focus on the integration of public health services with the academic content of the MHH. In particular, the Hanover region will act as a cooperation partner for the new competence center.
Goals of the partnership
A central goal of this collaboration is to link healthcare, research and teaching. The initiative aims to strengthen the teaching, research and practice network of the Public Health Service (ÖGD) and the MHH. In addition, a learning and research area should be established as a bridge between practical application and theoretical training. This serves the overarching goal of sustainably improving the health of people in the Hanover region.
As part of this collaboration, a focus will also be placed on optimizing training, further education and training in the area of public health services and public health. The background to this initiative is the establishment of the “Teaching and Research Health Office” (LFGA) by the Hanover Region on July 1, 2024, in order to strengthen teaching and research in the ÖGD.
Public health education
In addition to this important development, the MHH offers public health programs that enable students to gain a comprehensive understanding of the topic of health care. There are numerous opportunities for further training in this field, especially for those interested in studying. In this context, grants are also available for students in Germany, Austria or Switzerland, which could be applied for in 2021/2022.
The subsidies include, among other things, flat rates for tuition fees, books, health insurance and public transport, which can reduce the financial burden for students.
Overall, the collaboration between the Hanover Region and the MHH represents a significant step in improving health education and the practical application of research in the field of public health. The Federal Ministry of Health also emphasizes the importance of research collaborations in order to sustainably strengthen health care.
