Artificial intelligence: opportunities and challenges for business and society!

This year's business reception of the Leibniz University of Hannover (LUH) and the Lower Saxony Business Associations (UVN) took place on Monday, February 24, 2025. Under the motto “AI – game changer in science and business”, around 600 guests from business, science and politics gathered to discuss the effects of artificial intelligence (AI). The reception aimed to promote dialogue between the two areas, explore new forms of collaboration and expand existing collaborations.

The President of the LUH, Prof. Dr. Volker Epping, opened the event with a strong plea for functioning synergies between business and science. He pointed to the importance of gaining know-how and skills as well as technology and knowledge transfer, which is essential for the progress of both sectors. Epping also emphasized the role of start-up activities and their support as a key factor for innovation.

Diversity of topics and challenges of AI

The central topic discussed was artificial intelligence, whose rapid development sparks both enthusiasm and uncertainty. The challenges of AI use, such as increasing energy consumption and the potential impact on the labor market, were present, as were the opportunities that new technologies can offer. In his closing remarks, Benedikt Hüppe, Managing Director of the UVN, focused on the advantages and risks of AI. In addition to opening up new markets, he also emphasized the need for sensible regulations to counteract the risks of misuse.

Current studies on AI are essential to understand the technical, social, economic and ethical dimensions of this technology. The studies help identify opportunities and fill information gaps, especially for people without technical knowledge, according to a report by ki-echo.de is presented.

Ethical issues in the use of AI

The rapidly advancing development of AI raises complex ethical questions, which were also discussed. Particular attention was paid to the topics of data protection, decision transparency and the potential consequences of bias in AI systems. Related findings and recommendations emphasize the need for strict data protection measures and transparency in algorithm design, as stated in an article by das-wissen.de is highlighted.

AI can act as an economic growth engine and offers new opportunities in areas such as individualized medicine and optimized supply chains. Nevertheless, job losses and ethical concerns represent significant challenges. The state has a responsibility to create appropriate regulatory frameworks to maximize the benefits of AI and minimize risks.

The organization of the business reception was supported by well-known companies such as Exxon Mobil, neu/wagen and Digital Health City Hannover, who also have an interest in the responsible use of AI.
