MS Science: Discover the future of energy directly on the water!

On May 16, 2025, the MS Wissenschaft in Berlin started its tour through around 30 cities in Germany. This year, the floating science center, which operates on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, is dedicated to the topic of “Future Energy”. In this context, the MS Wissenschaft offers an interactive exhibition that deals with technological, social, ecological and economic aspects of the energy transition. Entry to the exhibition is free.

A special highlight on board is the miniature city “Green Energy for Cities” provided by the Leibniz University of Hannover (LUH). These exhibits are intended to make the energy transition tangible from different perspectives and demonstrate to visitors how renewable energy can be generated, stored and used in cities. The focus is on access to affordable and clean energy, especially in urban areas.

Interactive exhibitions and events

The MS Science tours as part of the Science Year and is implemented by, among others, Science in Dialogue (WiD). One goal of the exhibition is to shed light on Germany's course towards climate neutrality by 2045. Federal Research Minister Dorothee Bär emphasizes the need for a clean, safe and CO₂-free energy mix. Visitors will have the opportunity to participate in around 30 interactive exhibits, including designing a smart power grid and determining the energy consumption of their internet use.

The exhibit “Green Energy for Cities” shows technologies for generating electricity from wind and solar as well as the use of green hydrogen as energy storage and heating with heat pumps. The exhibition is aimed at children aged twelve and over and adults. As part of this initiative, the LUH also invites you to lecture and dialogue events to promote exchange on current research topics.

Appointments and contact

In Hanover, the MS Wissenschaft will be moored on the Mittelland Canal, near Vahrenwalder Straße at the tax office, from May 30th to June 3rd. Opening times are from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. (on May 30th only from 1 p.m.). Admission is free, but registration is required for groups. After Hanover, the tour leads west and south until September.

Anyone interested can reach them by phone at 0511 762-5342 or by email at kommunikation@uni-hannover.de.

With the challenges of increasing global energy demand, limited resources and climate change, the Science Year 2025 addresses central topics in energy research. The focus is on renewable energies, energy storage and new technologies that should enable a secure, cost-efficient and sustainable energy future. Information about the Science Year is available on the project website.
