New Foundation Committee of the University of Göttingen: Change in the committee!

The Senate of the University of Göttingen has reshuffled the Foundation Committee in order to redesign the future management and control of the university under foundation law. This week the new members who will take on their roles in the near future were elected. The new members are: Stephan Weil, Prof. Dr. Patrick Cramer, Prof. Dr. Anke Kaysser-Pyzalla, Prof. Dr. Verena Lepper, Dr. Hagen Duenbostel, Prof. Dr. Andrea Bührmann and Prof. Dr. Joachim Schachtner, who represents the Minister for Science and Culture (MWK) as State Secretary. However, the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture has yet to officially confirm these innovations uni-goettingen.de reported.

The new appointment became necessary after several members of the previous committee resigned, including Barbara Ischinger, Joachim Kreuzberg and Peter Strohschneider. Of the original six members, only three remain, which means that the foundation committee currently does not have a quorum. Minister Falko Mohrs stated that it was unclear how the replacement would take place and who would be responsible for issuing the dismissal certificate for Metin Tolan, the former university president stadtradio-goettingen.de reported.

Tasks of the foundation committee

The Foundation Committee of the University of Göttingen plays a central role. It acts as the central supervisory and advisory body for the foundation university and is therefore responsible for essential matters such as monitoring the presidium, granting legal supervision and approving the annual financial statements. The committee also contributes to quality assurance and transparency in university management. University President Prof. Dr. Axel Schölmerich expressed his anticipation of working with the new members, while Minister Weil emphasized the tradition and future of the university.

Financial support for universities in Lower Saxony

Parallel to the personnel changes at the University of Göttingen, significant funds are flowing into the universities in Lower Saxony. Science Minister Falko Mohrs announced that a total of 265 million euros would be made available through the “zukunft.niedersachsen” funding program to support the development of universities. The funds are intended for new professorships, study programs and research projects and are intended to enable universities to develop individual strategies to strengthen international competitiveness. This is evident from further information provided by zeit.de were published.

The Georg-August University of Göttingen is expected to receive 15 million euros, although this sum is tied to the continuation of its strategy by the new management. Overall, a flat rate of 10% for administrative and infrastructure expenses is also taken into account when distributing the funds, which increases the total funding to 291.5 million euros. Minister Mohrs emphasizes that this not only represents a unique opportunity for universities, but also wants to initiate necessary lasting changes in the university landscape.
