New sociology course in Osnabrück: opportunities for aspiring researchers!

On May 7, 2025, the University of Osnabrück introduced a new, nationwide unique study program in sociology. The aim of this program is to enable students to understand the theoretical and methodological foundations of sociological research. The thematic focus is on the relationship between sociology and society as well as the transfer of sociological knowledge into practice. This initiative is in line with the increasing importance of sociology as a discipline that has both academic and social relevance.

Students will have the opportunity to gain experience in research and communicate the results in a practical way. Special features of the program are thematic openness, flexibility and research focus. Theoretical and methodological knowledge is imparted in seminars, which is supplemented by participation in teaching research on current topics. In addition, a “Jour fixe” is offered every semester, which enables in-depth discussions, workshops and discussions on topics related to the master’s thesis. An elective area gives students the opportunity to set individual priorities in their studies.

Practical orientation and application

A central element of the study program is the course on public sociology and scientific organization as well as an integrated internship that contributes to professional orientation. A total of 25 study places are being offered and applications open today, May 7th. The requirements for applying include a BA degree in sociology, social sciences or a professionally suitable course of study with at least 60 credit points in theory, methods and sociological topics. Those interested can contact Prof. Dr. Lars Gertenbach and Prof. Dr. Inform Kai-Olaf Maiwald about the program.

The role of sociology in society

The introduction of the new study program comes at a time when contemporary diagnostic analyzes play an ambivalent role in sociology. How sociology.de explained, they grant the discipline social visibility, but are often viewed as scientifically borderline. Despite their shortcomings, they offer a high potential for stimulation and can be seen as a hybrid sociological form of knowledge at the interface between internal and external attention economies. This shows how important it is that students are not only theoretically versed, but also develop the ability to effectively contribute their knowledge to society.

In this context, academic sociology, with its ability to capture and analyze current social dynamics, is becoming increasingly relevant. The new study program at the University of Osnabrück is not only a step towards in-depth sociological training, but also a contribution to strengthening sociological knowledge in society. By closely linking theory and practice, students will be able to act as future actors in sociology.
