Lower Saxony invests: start research projects on world heritage!
The Lower Saxony state government announces that it will support two new research projects at Leibniz University Hannover with a total of more than 400,000 euros. This initiative is part of the Pro*Niedersachsen program, which is dedicated to supporting high-level research projects in the humanities, cultural sciences and social sciences. The two funded projects have the potential to gain important insights into the cultural identity and heritage of Lower Saxony.
The first project entitled “World Cultural Heritage from the Perspective of Young People” will receive 222,148 euros. Under the direction of Prof. Dr. Christiane Meyer and Prof. Dr. Joachim Grabowski examines how 15 to 17 year olds perceive Lower Saxony's world heritage sites and what personal meaning they attach to them. As part of this project, the TRUST research center and selected schools in Hanover are working together to develop a deeper understanding of the perspectives of the young generation.
Preservation of historical heritage
The second project, “Development of architectural and archaeological monuments”, is funded with 196,563 euros and is led by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Monika Sester. This project focuses in particular on the Harz mining region, which is known for its high density of cultural monuments, including the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Upper Harz Water Management. The aim is to develop an innovative process for the automated measurement and documentation of monuments, using the latest geoinformatics and machine learning methods.
The Pro*Niedersachsen program aims to research the region's cultural traditions and make them accessible to the public. It therefore offers an important platform for interdisciplinary research and aims to promote Lower Saxony's cultural heritage.
Lower Saxony's world heritage sites
Lower Saxony can point to an impressive list of world heritage sites that are protected by UNESCO's “Convention for the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage”. This agreement, adopted on November 16, 1972, aims to preserve cultural and natural heritage of exceptional importance. Germany is currently home to 52 World Heritage sites, with Lower Saxony having the following notable sites:
| site | Year of recording |
|---|---|
| Cathedral and St. Michael's Church in Hildesheim | 1985 |
| Rammelsberg ore mine and Goslar old town | 1992 (expansion 2010) |
| Fagus factory in Alfeld | 2011 |
These cultural monuments represent not only the historical significance of the region, but also its architectural diversity and the influence of the past on the present.
Overall, the Lower Saxony state government's funding initiative illustrates the commitment to preserving and researching the region's rich cultural heritage. The projects at Leibniz University Hannover are a step in the right direction to preserve and make accessible cultural values and historical heritage for future generations.
