Revolutionary Environmental Systems Science: Unique study programs in Osnabrück!
On June 19, 2025, the University of Osnabrück invites you to a comprehensive information day to offer potential students insights into the unique field of environmental systems science. This subject is not offered at any other university in Germany and is characterized by interdisciplinary scientific training. Students learn how to use mathematics, computer science and other subjects to solve pressing environmental problems.
Visitors have the opportunity to attend lectures and get in touch with teachers and students. You will not only get to know the structure of the degree programs, but also take a closer look at current topics in environmental systems science. In particular, it involves creating and analyzing mathematical models and simulations to solve complex environmental problems.
A central concern of the course is to train students for a broad professional field. Graduates find jobs in various areas, including environmental protection, monitoring, planning adaptation strategies, management consulting and sustainable development.
Interdisciplinary approaches and modules
The Environmental Systems Science course is not only characterized by its interdisciplinary orientation, but also promotes awareness of interdisciplinary considerations. The students work closely with other environmental systems science courses and learn to recognize the complexity of complex problems and develop proposed solutions.
Another important part of the training is systems science. Students are familiarized with formal scientific approaches and receive in-depth training in mathematical and computer-aided tools. This also includes comprehensive training in the areas of mathematics, statistics, physics and chemistry. Fundamental problems in physics and basic chemical laws are discussed in greater depth.
Goal of environmental systems science
The field of environmental systems science is specifically designed to address ecological and social challenges. It's about recognizing changes in environmental systems and identifying sustainable solutions. Systems scientists analyze the relationships within complex systems such as ecosystems or human-environment systems in order to explain and control their behavior.
Methods such as mathematical and computer-aided models play a central role. In addition, early practical relevance is ensured through environmentally relevant research and development projects. The close connection of the study program with the research topics of the Institute for Environmental Systems Research (IUSF) is a further advantage, as study projects and bachelor theses are often prepared at the IUSF.
