Summer Academy in Braunschweig: Children research and experiment!

In the week from August 4th to 8th, 2025, an innovative holiday program for school students took place at the Technical University of Braunschweig. The workshops were organized by the language didactics department, the Institute for German Studies, the Institute for Physics and Physics Didactics and the Institute for Biology and Biology Didactics. A total of 37 children between the ages of 10 and 14 from Braunschweig and the surrounding area took part. The offer was supported by the Research Institute of Teacher Education (RI) and the Braunschweiger Hochschulbund, while a cooperation with the Haus der Wissenschaft supplemented the program.

The offer included a variety of workshops in the areas of biology, physics and German. The children were able to engage intensively with topics ranging from ecology to acoustic phenomena to the use of artificial intelligence in writing. Particularly noteworthy are the creative approaches, such as the production of stop-motion videos or the creation of a balancing robot.

Focus on research-based learning

A central element of this program was research-based learning. The children were encouraged to formulate their own questions and develop hypotheses. Supported by research assistants and doctoral students, the participants explored subjects in an interactive way. Exemplary workshops were the Action Bound in the Botanical Garden to rescue a missing botanist and the experiments on rocket physics.

The aim of this initiative went beyond simply imparting knowledge. The organizers wanted to give the children the joy of learning and support them in their teamwork. Findings from the workshops will also be incorporated into the development of new teaching materials for schools, which further underlines the university's educational mission.

A look at future projects shows that this year's Summer Camp was not just a one-off event. Rather, it acts as a prelude to further exciting initiatives in the coming years.

Metrology in focus for doctoral students

A highlight for the participants will be the workshop by Prof. Dr. Meinhard Schilling, who deals with the successful writing of dissertations. This is complemented by poster sessions and evening events that provide opportunities for dialogue and networking with scientists and industry representatives.

In addition to these local offers for school students and doctoral students, there are various summer schools around the world. These enable students to get to know university life and get in touch with students from all over the world. Programs at award-winning summer camps offer a look at diverse educational topics, such as English literature at Oxford University or software development in San Francisco, and contribute to intercultural education.
