Strategic exchange: TU Braunschweig and UNAM set a milestone!

The collaboration between the Technical University of Braunschweig and the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) has developed significantly. The two established institutions have been working closely together for over 15 years, particularly in the areas of biotechnology and geophysics. Last year, a strategic partnership was signed, initiated by TU President Professor Angela Ittel and UNAM Rector Leonardo Lomelí Vanegas. This underlines the long-standing, trusting relationship between both universities.

UNAM is considered one of the largest and most respected research universities in Latin America. Since the main campus was declared a World Heritage Site in 2007, it has enjoyed international reputation, particularly because of its focus on sustainability and interdisciplinary research approaches. The TU Braunschweig's commitment to this partnership is reflected in a variety of exchange programs that have been taking place since 2008, as well as in joint research projects in the areas of mathematics and sustainable water management.

Joint research projects and exchange

The cooperation includes numerous initiatives. A joint seed funding call last year promotes exchange and the implementation of joint projects. This also includes the recently introduced double degree program, which enables doctoral students to conduct research at both universities. Professor Volker Bach from TU Braunschweig and Professor Miguel Ballesteros from UNAM have been working together in the field of mathematical physics for over 15 years and have contributed significantly to the success of this partnership.

Professor Miguel Ballesteros and his colleague Fedro Guillen are currently visiting the TU Braunschweig to take part in international conferences in Mexico. This mobility is a central aspect of the collaboration, which not only promotes academic exchange but also contributes to international networking among students. Dr. Sinuhé Alejandro Sánchez Martínez from UNAM was a guest at the Leichtweiß Institute for Hydraulic Engineering (LWI) at the end of June. His project “VIP MEXICO” aims to validate precipitation reanalysis data to assess their suitability for runoff models, particularly with regard to hurricanes.

Strategic partnerships worldwide

The UNAM is not the only strategic partnership at TU Braunschweig. This is also reflected in the cooperation with other internationally recognized institutions. These include Tampere University in Finland, the University of Rhode Island in the USA and the University of Strathclyde in Scotland. These universities offer TU Braunschweig students and researchers various opportunities for international exchange and joint research projects.

Tampere University, the second largest university in Finland, has been cooperating with TU Braunschweig in the areas of research and ERASMUS mobility since 2008. The University of Rhode Island, a leading public university in the USA, also has a double degree program that has existed since 1987 and has produced over 900 graduates to date.

The strategic partnerships not only strengthen the position of the TU Braunschweig on an international level, but also promote the exchange of knowledge and joint research in basic and applied sciences. These initiatives are essential components of TU Braunschweig's strategy to remain at the forefront of the global education landscape as a leading research university.

In summary, it can be said that the Technical University of Braunschweig is actively expanding its role as an international partner in the scientific landscape. With UNAM she has a strong partner at her side in the area of sustainability and interdisciplinary research.
