Theater hit in Hildesheim: The Other Alice” shows the search for identity!
The English Drama Group at the University of Hildesheim is bringing the play “The Other Alice” to the stage from July 1st to 5th, 2025. This performance is a thrilling reimagining of Lewis Carroll's classic work, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. How uni-hildesheim.de reports, the piece offers a creative perspective that encourages the audience to discover their own identity.
“The Other Alice” captivates viewers with elaborate costumes, humorous gags, musical interludes and dramatic fights. A central theme of the piece is the question of one's true self and coming to terms with growing up, which is underlined by a coming-of-age aspect. A total of 21 people and two backstage helpers participated in the creation of the piece and have been working on its development since the last winter semester.
A collaborative process
Particularly noteworthy is the participation of the participants, who actively work on the script and are involved in the design of the set, costumes, props and choreographies. The prerequisite for this is the creative exchange within the group, which contributes significantly to the thematic depth of the piece.
The piece works with the idea that there is not just one Alice and addresses questions of normality and identity. These aspects correspond to the characteristics of the coming-of-age story, which in dramaturgy often deals with young people's search for identity. Similar themes are also explored in classic coming-of-age films, such as utheses.univie.ac.at that help to understand the challenges and developmental processes that young people face.
