TU Braunschweig presents a free app for dragonfly identification!
On May 16, 2025, the Technical University of Braunschweig raised the UN Sustainable Development Goals flag. This significant symbol signals the university's commitment to sustainable development. Prof. Manfred Krafczyk explained the significance of this step, which is part of a long-term strategy to promote ecological responsibility. Numerous events and projects took place within this framework, which demonstrate the TU's commitment to education and research. Professors met in the architecture pavilion for an annual exchange that has been established since 2021.
The “With Light Luggage” project is currently starting at the TU, in which over 50 employees are taking part in order to optimize internal processes. Daniel Prades, who has been the first Alexander von Humboldt Professor at TU Braunschweig since 2024, will be introduced as part of the “Innovators & Explorers” series. In addition, strategic decisions to strengthen the regional ecosystem were discussed in a closed meeting.
Innovations and research
A notable TU project is the newly developed free app “ID-Logics Dragonflies”, which allows users to identify all 81 dragonfly species found in Germany. The app is aimed particularly at people interested in nature, students and extracurricular learning venues. This initiative helps promote conservation and citizen science by increasing knowledge about biodiversity. Dragonflies are also considered indicators of the health of water bodies and are endangered by various environmental factors. The app offers high-resolution photos, explanatory videos and user-friendly, error-tolerant determination logic, so that even laypeople can easily use the app.
The interdisciplinary team that developed the app includes, among others, Prof. Dr. Jorge Groß and Dr. Armin Blöchl. They have integrated special distribution maps, which come from the Society of German-Speaking Odonatologists, into the app. In addition, the app is provided with extensive biological information and a glossary and is suitable for biology lessons.
Events and collaborations
The TU Braunschweig is not only active in the research landscape, but also in the area of events and high-profile projects. On May 20, the Science and Art Lab will present the Quantum Piano project, followed by other events to mark World Metrology Day. On May 28th, the TU Ethics Commission invites you to the kick-off event “Ethics-Research-Responsibility”.
In addition, a team of six scientists will take part in the Science Salon on June 18th to promote exchange with interested parties. The “Lifelines” conference on May 23rd and 24th will also focus on the importance of infrastructures that go beyond technical supplies. In a current cultural exchange, the German Pavilion at the Architecture Biennale in Venice will shed light on the effects of climate change on urban space until November 23rd.
In summary, the TU Braunschweig demonstrates its commitment to sustainability, education and research at the highest level with its diverse activities. The combination of practical projects, innovative approaches to research and active exchange with society positions the university as an important player in the German higher education landscape.
