Wolfsburg celebrates World Quantum Day with an interactive exhibit in the Phaeno!
Researchers of the TU Braunschweig and the University of Leipzig have developed an innovative exhibit that aims to bring quantum technologies closer to the general public. This project will be completed on April 14, 2025World Quantum Day, presented at the Phaeno Science Center in Wolfsburg. The reason for this development is the festive conclusion of the “International Year of Quantum Science and Technology”, which celebrates 100 years of modern quantum physics.
The exhibit is entitled “Quantum technologies in the museum: Diamond quantum sensors you can touch” (DiQuaMus) and is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Professor Rainer Müller from the TU Braunschweig and Professor Nabeel Aslam from the University of Leipzig are working together here. The idea is simple but profound: visitors should interactively learn how nitrogen vacancy centers (NV centers) in diamonds function as highly sensitive quantum sensors for magnetic fields. This is made possible through a hands-on experience.
Interactive experiences in the Phaeno Science Center
The exhibit offers a unique opportunity to experiment with real quantum technology and measure magnetic fields. During the presentation in Wolfsburg, curious visitors will witness the practical applications of quantum mechanics. The prototype was developed in collaboration with the Phaeno team to ensure safe and intuitive operation as well as an attractive design. Following the ceremonial launch, the exhibit will be permanently included in the exhibition, creating an ongoing learning opportunity for future generations.
The development of the prototype took about a year and underwent intensive testing in order to enable optimal integration into the hands-on exhibition. The idea for the exhibit came about during a visit to the Phaeno Science Center and has now been realized to make quantum technology alive and tangible. After the exhibition in the Phaeno, it will also be examined whether the exhibit can also be found in other museums or schools in order to expand the teaching of quantum knowledge.
World Quantum Day and the 2025 exhibitions
World Quantum Day, celebrated on April 14, pays homage to Planck's constant, symbolized by the number 4.14, and promotes quantum research events worldwide. Numerous activities are planned in Germany, including workshops, lectures and hands-on offers that are intended to increase awareness and understanding of quantum mechanics.
In addition, there is also the Knowledge Museum University of Göttingen an exhibition on the quantum year 2025 will take place. This exhibition will be on view from March 27th to October 5th, 2025 and illuminates the emergence of quantum mechanics and its effects to this day. This includes action-oriented experiments and a thematic examination of the social conditions of scientific breakthroughs.
The coming year not only offers a platform for interactive exhibits like in Wolfsburg, but also for comprehensive educational offerings that are intended to help make quantum knowledge accessible to a broader audience.
