Future of education: AI-supported master's event in Braunschweig!

Artificial intelligence (AI) has already found its way into many areas of life, be it in the form of voice assistants or personalized music recommendations. A current example of the integration of AI into education is the Pattern Recognition Computer Lab at the Technical University of Braunschweig. Here, students gain practical experience in pattern recognition, an area that is central to the development of intelligent systems. This event was introduced as a master's event in 2023 and has been nominated several times for the TU Teaching Prize. In the summer semester of 2025, high-performing students from the 10th grade onwards were allowed to visit the laboratory for the first time, which is a significant step in promoting talent.

The participants were selected in close collaboration with the NiedersachsenMetall Foundation. In order to take part, the students had to demonstrate excellent grades in mathematics and computer science as well as good knowledge of English. In the end, 13 talented students were selected, eleven of whom took part in the program. Ten of them received microcredits that can be credited towards their later studies. What is particularly noteworthy is that seven participants, including one student, received access to five ECTS credit points in the master's program in information systems technology at the TU Braunschweig without having to show a high school diploma.

Insights into the computer lab

The Computer Lab Pattern Recognition consists of seven teaching units, with students having to successfully complete six units to pass the module. Between 0.25 and 1.0 ECTS points are awarded for each unit passed. One ECTS point corresponds to approximately 25 to 30 hours of work, and a full year of study usually includes 60 ECTS. The scientific director, Professor Tim Fingscheidt, highlighted the remarkable achievements of the participating students and expressed optimism about the future continuation of the project.

In the context of the Computer Lab Pattern Recognition, a new lecture “AI Engineering” is also planned for the winter semester 2025/2026. This lecture conveys practical aspects of Large Language Models (LLMs) and uses the proven Computer Lab format. The laboratory was built as part of the joint project KI4ALL developed, which is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

KI4ALL and its goals

The project KI4ALL includes collaborations between the Technical University of Braunschweig, the TU Clausthal and the Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences. The aim is to create an AI hub for networking and exchange in the field of artificial intelligence. Teaching is supported by the digital creation of content on current application and research areas of artificial intelligence, which is published as Open Educational Resources (OER). This was aimed not only at students, but at anyone interested in expanding their AI skills.

The initiative is part of a broader BMBF strategy to promote AI in higher education, which has been implemented since the end of 2021. As part of the federal-state initiative “Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education”, projects are funded that aim to develop study programs, intelligent assistance systems and AI-based learning and examination systems. The BMBF emphasizes the importance of AI as a key technology for the future.

In addition to the educational projects mentioned, the BMBF supports numerous digital transformation initiatives, including the AI ​​Campus, which offers a learning platform for online courses and other teaching formats. The discussion about the use of AI, especially from providers such as ChatGPT, in higher education is also gaining momentum. The quality and impact of such technologies on teaching and learning processes are controversially discussed, which points to the importance of integrating AI into modern educational concepts. This also implies that research in the field of AI must be constantly advanced in order to meet the requirements of the digital society.
