Future skills: Universities in the race for the knowledge of tomorrow!
In the constantly changing educational landscape, the integration of future skills into higher education is a central issue. The Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft has dealt intensively with the development of these key competencies and is pursuing strategies to support universities in adapting their curricula. These innovations are not only important for the students, but also for the entire German economy, which relies on well-qualified specialists.
The Future Skills Framework, developed in collaboration with McKinsey & Company, identifies a total of 21 competencies divided into four categories: traditional competencies, key digital competencies, technological competencies and transformative competencies. Initiatives to promote future skills
Another important step in this process is the Alliance for Future Skills, which operates under the leadership of the Stifterverband. This initiative aims to increase the proportion of universities that integrate artificial intelligence and other future skills into their educational offerings. A notable milestone was the creation of a Future Skills Charter in November/December 2024, which was based on an extensive consultation process and collected over 200 suggestions from more than 400 interested parties.
The Center for Higher Education Development (CHE), which acts as a think tank and has 30 years of experience in higher education, also supports the development of future skills. It regularly publishes studies and recommendations to help universities adapt their courses. Furthermore, the NextSkills portal is run by Professor Dr. Ulf-Daniel Ehlers aims to share practices and promote research in the area of future skills.
The role of politics and universities
Education policy plays a crucial role in implementing these initiatives. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) promotes the development of future skills through various research and educational initiatives and provides financing options for innovative educational projects. This support is important in order to provide universities with the necessary resources for a sustainable renewal of their teaching and learning formats.
The universities themselves are faced with the challenge of adapting their educational strategies to the requirements of the future labor market. In order to remain competitive, they must impart new skills in the areas of content, learning settings and research environments. At the same time, the need for well-trained digital and big data specialists is becoming increasingly clear, which is increasing the competition for qualified personnel. Universities are therefore called upon not only to change their curricula, but also to create comprehensive continuing education offerings in the area of transformative technologies in order to act as pioneers in research and teaching.
In summary, the future of higher education depends largely on the successful integration of future skills. The strategic potential is significant and opens up new avenues for collaboration between universities and industry. This is not only a challenge but also an opportunity to adapt education to the dynamic needs of society.
