Bees on campus: Cologne University starts sustainable honey project!
On Monday, June 26, 2025, an innovative project will begin at the German Sport University Cologne that will not only contribute to biodiversity, but also strengthen the local community. The first beehives will be installed on campus to help produce high-quality university honey. This commitment to the environment is part of the campus project Campus Noster!, which is led by Dr. Helge Knigge was initiated to create awareness of sustainable practices.
The entire bee colonies are looked after in close cooperation with the Cologne Beekeeping Association. The bee boxes will be positioned in a protected location so as not to disrupt the university's operations. Particular attention will be paid to the first beehives, which are strategically located between dormitories A and B, where easy accessibility is guaranteed.
Honey with meaning
The honey produced there will be known as “SpoHonig” and will be used, given away and sold among members of the university community. This not only provides a practical benefit, but also promotes a culture of sharing and environmental protection.
In addition to honey, the project plans to set up an herb garden. This should not only serve as a habitat for solitary wild bees, but also deepen our understanding of the importance of insects in our ecosystem.
How bne.unesco.de explains, bees act as ambassadors for the insect world. The associated discussion of honey and beekeeping promotes a sustainable and compassionate understanding of nature, especially among children. In this context, the work of proBiene is also recognized, an institute for organic beekeeping that organizes educational projects and involves around 120 groups in workshops and seminars every year.
Participation in events such as the show beekeeping in the Stutengarten or an action stand at the Green Week in Berlin shows how important it is to educate people about the role of bees in nature. The partnerships with organizations such as Demeter e.V., Slow Food Deutschland e.V. and botanical gardens strengthen this educational approach.
With this innovative approach, the German Sport University Cologne hopes to not only involve its own students, but also to create a greater awareness of sustainability and environmental awareness throughout the region.
