Digital education revolution: New research sheds light on the darkness!
On April 24, 2025, digital platforms in education will increasingly be the focus of discussions in Germany. Prof. Dr. Sandra Hofhues and Prof. Dr. Julia Schütz from the FernUniversität in Hagen present current research results that shed light on the advancing digitalization in the education sector.
The two scientists emphasize the importance of “doing” and those “doing” in the context of digital technologies. This shows a blatant lack of research into the creation and development of platforms in the back-end area of these technologies in Germany. Her studies do not exclusively relate to computer science, but are aimed at educational scientists and their perspectives.
Research objectives and results
The primary goal of the publications is to create transparency and acceptance in the use of digital education platforms. The researchers investigate how learners, teachers and technical systems interact with each other. The newly published volume by transcript Verlag is divided into three parts: The first part deals with platforms as a research subject, followed by empirical results and collegial contributions from the academic community.
The results not only document the understanding of learning with digital technology, but also shed light on the transformations in the structures of the educational institutions themselves. Another aspect is the data protection challenges and the preservation of anonymity, which are becoming increasingly important in today's digitalized educational landscape.
The research focus, supported by the “Education Offensive for the Digital Knowledge Society” strategy of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, addresses the integration of digital technologies in all areas of life. Research into teaching-learning processes and the development of necessary skills are the focus of the funded projects, such as BMBF reported.
Challenges of digitalization in education
The challenges of technological change require a targeted and qualitative examination of digital formats. Only around 50% of companies in Germany have successfully completed the digital transformation so far, with one in three organizations seeing themselves in a strong position, as the analysis shows d-velop emerges.
In digital transformation, companies are required to implement digital solutions to optimize processes and increase competitiveness. Advantages such as improved efficiency and new business models are undisputed, but high investment costs and the need to train qualified personnel in the area of digital technologies are also key points of criticism.
The success of this digital evolution depends heavily on the development of interdisciplinary approaches. Methodological foundations and close collaboration with educational institutions are essential in order to build a bridge between research and practice.
The results of this current research represent an important step towards making the future educational path in Germany sustainable and mastering the challenges of digitalization in the best possible way.
